The first week of 2026 Upward Bound Summer Academy kept us all very busy! Students moved into the residence halls, met their roommates, and settled into campus life.

Last week included plenty of opportunities to connect our 1960’s theme to hands-on learning—from recreating vintage Jello mold recipes with some very interesting ingredients to exploring the campus recreation center and bringing giant Hungry Hungry Hippos to life. Beyond the fun, students also began core academic instruction, building skills and preparing for future college success each day.

A sincere THANK YOU to our 1960’s alumni (Bob Dickson and Darl & Linda Davis) who graciously returned to share their experiences, stories, and wisdom with our current students. Your willingness to invest in the next generation and show students what is possible means more than words can express.

The final day of the UB Spring college visit trip, students toured Northwest Missouri State University. A highlight of the visit was connecting with 2 UB alumni- Chelsea Miller and Brice Moeller - who shared their college experience and offered real-world advice. A 3rd UB alum - Reagan Wilborn - led our campus tour. Everyone enjoyed the fantastic weather during this trip to Nebraska and returned prepared to take the next steps toward college.

Day 2 of the trip was a busy one! Students explored the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, applying curiosity and critical thinking as they engaged with science in real-world settings. During their visit to the University of Nebraska–Omaha, UB participants met with SSS staff & students during their tour and got to see the great living options available on campus. The day ended with a visit to The Durham Museum, which is housed in the beautifully restored 1931 Omaha Union Station.

Last week, Truman UB students kicked off their Spring college visit trip with a tour of Peru State College and visit with their SSS program. Students asked thoughtful questions and explored campus to learn more about affordable options outside the state of Missouri. Everyone wrapped up the day over dinner at Spaghetti Works in Omaha's Old Market.

Upward Bound students came to Truman State University last week for Campus Day! Students toured campus facilities, connected with peers from other high schools, and got a firsthand look at what to expect during the 2026 Summer Academy. Campus Day is as an important step in helping students feel confident in their abilities, comfortable on campus, and ready to succeed this summer.

We can't wait to welcome them back in June for a summer of growth, learning, and new experiences as we celebrate six decades of impact and opportunity!
