New Washington rules are bringing more clarity to the difference between an e-bike and an e-motorcycle — and this is especially important for families with kids and teens.

As more electric bikes and electric motorcycles show up in neighborhoods, school parking lots, trails, and sports fields, it’s a good reminder to make sure everyone understands the rules, the risks, and the responsibilities that come with them.

A true e-bike has working pedals, a motor within the legal limits, and certain speed restrictions. If it does not meet those requirements, it may be considered a motorcycle — which can come with additional licensing and legal requirements.

Before your child, teen, or family member hops on an electric bike or electric motorcycle this summer, take a few minutes to read up on the new Washington law and make sure the vehicle is being used safely and legally.
