🚗 NEW TENNESSEE LAW: PROOF OF INSURANCE REQUIRED TO REGISTER VEHICLES STARTING IN 2027

A major change is coming for Tennessee drivers.

Beginning July 1, 2027, drivers will be required to provide proof of insurance in order to register a vehicle under a new law passed by state lawmakers.

Supporters of the measure say it’s aimed at reducing the number of uninsured drivers on Tennessee roads. According to lawmakers, of the 175,000 crashes reported in Tennessee last year, approximately 35,000 involved uninsured drivers.

“What we’re concerned about are the millions of Tennesseans whose costs for insurance have risen exponentially because one-sixth of our driving population does not have insurance,” said State Rep. David Hawk (R-Greeneville).

The law also dramatically increases penalties for driving without insurance:

🔹 First offense: $25 → $500 fine
🔹 Second offense: $100 → $1,000 fine
🔹 Third and subsequent offenses: $1,500 fine

Supporters say the new requirements will help lower costs for insured drivers and hold uninsured motorists accountable.
