New Study Reveals Major Flood Risk for Gulf & Atlantic Coast Cities
Are you living in Jacksonville, Miami, or Mobile?
This study can provide insight on potential flood risk for your area.
A 2026 study published in Science Advances has identified eight U.S. coastal cities at extremely high flood risk Cities at Highest Risk include:
Florida:
Jacksonville - 679,251 people exposed (68% of population)
Miami - 376,311 people exposed (85% of population)
Alabama:
Mobile - 71,357-102,342 people exposed (33-47% of population)
What the Research Found:
Using machine learning and 16 risk factors, researchers analyzed historical flood damage from hurricanes including Harvey, Irma, Matthew, and Sandy.
The findings are sobering:
Low-lying, densely populated urban areas face the greatest risk Nearly 99% of New Orleans is at high flood risk. 4.75 million people in New York City are exposed.
Flood risk is increasing due to sea level rise, land subsidence, and drainage density
Important Information for Homeowners:
Important: There is typically a 15-30 day waiting period for flood insurance policies—UNLESS you're purchasing coverage for a new home closing.
Don't wait until the next hurricane season approaches.
The time to protect your home is NOW.
