Turning 65 doesn’t automatically mean you have to retire or leave your employer health plan. However, when you enroll in Medicare can affect your coverage, costs, and HSA.

Before making a decision, talk with your employer’s benefits administrator. Ask how your current health plan works with Medicare and whether you should enroll in Part A and/or Part B.

Planning to retire soon? Start your Medicare planning early. The timing of your enrollment can help prevent coverage gaps and possible late-enrollment penalties.

Remember COBRA: COBRA generally isn’t considered coverage from current employment for Medicare’s Special Enrollment Period. Don’t assume choosing COBRA allows you to delay Medicare.

Pro tip: If you contribute to an HSA, Medicare enrollment can affect your ability to make HSA contributions, so timing matters.
