It’s Ask Phil Thursday!

Do I have to wait until Open Enrollment to get health insurance?

Not always.

ACA Marketplace plans generally require Open Enrollment or a qualifying life event within the last 60 days, such as losing other coverage, getting married, moving, or having a baby.

However, some private health insurance options are available year-round for people who qualify.

The right answer depends on your health, budget, location, and coverage needs—which is why it’s worth looking at every option before assuming you have to wait.

Nothing means more than hearing that a client felt supported — not just while choosing coverage, but afterward too.

Health insurance questions don't always stop once the application is finished. I try to make sure my clients know they can still call or text me when something doesn't make sense.

Thank you, Katherine, for the kind words and for trusting me to help.

Molly has concerns. 😂🐾

Apparently someone told her they picked their health insurance because “it was the cheapest one.”

That face says everything I need to say.

The monthly premium matters — but so does the deductible, provider network, prescription coverage, copays, coinsurance, and what you could actually owe when you need to use the plan.

The cheapest plan isn’t always the least expensive plan.

Before you choose coverage, make sure you understand what you’re actually getting.

Molly recommends reading the fine print.
I recommend calling me so you don’t have to. 😂

💡 TIP MONDAY: “It says it’s covered… so why did I still get a bill?” 😳

This is one of those health insurance phrases that causes a LOT of confusion.

Covered doesn’t always mean free.

Depending on your plan, a covered service may still be subject to your deductible, copay, or coinsurance.

That’s why I always tell people not to stop at “Is it covered?”

The better question is: “What will my responsibility be?”

A two-minute check before a procedure can save you from a very unpleasant surprise afterward. 😅

Friday check-in.

Another week of answering questions, comparing plans, helping people figure out what the heck their health insurance actually covers… 😂

And that's really what I wanted Valor Health Solutions to be.

A place where you can ask a question, get a straight answer, and understand your options without feeling like you're sitting through a sales pitch.

If you've got a health insurance question you've been putting off, I'm around.

If not, that's okay too. 😂 Hope everybody has a great weekend! 🇺🇸

💬 ASK PHIL: “I’m self-employed. Can I get health insurance that works like an employer plan?”

Absolutely — and this is one of the most common questions I get.

Being self-employed doesn’t mean you’re stuck with one type of health insurance. Depending on your situation, you may have options through the Marketplace as well as private coverage with larger provider networks and benefits that can feel much more like the coverage you may have had through an employer.

The important part is figuring out which option actually makes sense for your health, budget, doctors, prescriptions, and how you use your coverage.

That’s what I help people sort through every day.

“What happens if I actually have to USE this plan?”

Monthly premium matters. But so do the deductible, provider network, prescriptions, out-of-pocket costs, and how the coverage actually works when something unexpected happens.

A plan that looks cheaper on paper isn't always cheaper when you actually need care.

That's why I spend so much time helping people look beyond the monthly price and understand what they're actually buying.

My job isn't to talk you into a particular plan. It's to help you understand the differences so you can make a decision that actually makes sense for you.

Health insurance doesn't have to be confusing.

💊 TIP MONDAY: Ever get to the pharmacy and find out your prescription costs WAY more than you expected?

Your plan’s drug formulary may be the reason.

Not every medication is covered the same way. The tier a prescription falls into can make a big difference in what you pay — and some medications may require prior authorization.

A quick check before filling a new prescription can save you an expensive surprise at the counter.

Health insurance doesn’t have to be confusing.

Most people don’t wake up excited to talk about health insurance. 😂

And honestly, I don’t blame them.

My goal with Valor Health Solutions has always been pretty simple — make health insurance easier to understand, give people honest guidance, and help them figure out what actually makes sense for their situation.

No pressure. No confusing insurance talk. Just real conversations and straightforward answers.

That’s what Health Insurance Made Simple means to me.

Hope everyone has a great Friday! 🇺🇸
