An engagement ring is one of the most valuable things you own, emotionally and financially. But is it actually protected? Most standard home and renters policies only cover jewelry up to $1,500 to $2,500 for theft. Accidental loss, like a stone falling out or losing it on vacation, usually is not covered at all. A standalone jewelry policy will protect your ring and your insurance premiums in the event of a claim.

Working from home full time or running a side business? Your homeowners policy may not cover your business equipment or liability. Standard home insurance has low limits on business equipment, often $2,500 or less. If a client visits your home and gets injured, your homeowners liability may not apply. Business inventory stored at home may not be covered at all. A simple endorsement or in-home business policy can fill these gaps without breaking the budget.

If you drive for Uber, Lyft, or any rideshare platform, your personal auto policy may not cover you while you're working. Personal auto insurance typically excludes commercial use. Rideshare companies provide some coverage but only during certain phases of the trip. The gap period, when the app is on but you haven't accepted a ride, is often where personal policies fall short. A rideshare endorsement added to your personal policy can fill that gap affordably. Ask your local agent if you're covered end to end.

Heading to college? Don't leave your belongings unprotected. Your parents' homeowners policy may extend some coverage to dorm rooms but usually with low limits. If you're living off campus, you almost certainly need your own renters policy. Laptops, electronics, and textbooks add up fast. Renters insurance can help replace them if they're stolen or damaged. Most policies start at less than $20 a month, less than most streaming subscriptions.

Planning a home renovation? Your insurance needs to keep up. Adding square footage, a new kitchen, or a finished basement increases your home's rebuild cost, meaning your current coverage limits may no longer be enough. Contractors working on your home should carry their own liability insurance. If they don't, you could be exposed. Some renovations like adding a pool or trampoline may also affect your liability coverage. Always notify your insurer before major projects begin.

Just bought a new car? Before you drive off the lot, make sure your insurance is updated. Your existing policy may not automatically cover your new vehicle at the right level. A new car likely needs comprehensive and collision coverage, especially if you have a loan or lease. A quick call to your local agent before you drive home could save you from a costly gap in protection.

Did you know your credit score can affect your auto insurance premium? A higher credit score often means lower premiums. Insurers use it as a factor in determining risk. Improving your credit over time could lead to real savings on your policy. Not all states allow credit-based pricing, so ask your local agent what applies in your area. Small changes in your credit profile could mean big changes in what you pay.

When most people think of home insurance, they think of protecting the building itself. But a standard policy usually does more than that.

Here’s what could be included:

🔹 Dwelling Coverage – Repairs or rebuilds your home if it's damaged by a covered peril (like fire or wind).
🔹 Other Structures – Covers things like fences, sheds, and detached garages.
🔹 Personal Property – Helps replace stolen or damaged belongings, from furniture to electronics—even items stored off-site in some cases!
🔹 Loss of Use – Pays for additional living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable due to a covered event. Think hotel stays, meals, and more.
🔹 Liability Protection – Covers legal expenses if someone gets hurt on your property or if you accidentally cause damage to someone else’s property.

🛑 Pro Tip: Not all policies are the same. Limits, exclusions, and deductibles matter so it’s smart to understand what your policy actually includes.
