THE COACH WHO STOPPED A MATCH

Today, my son’s U10 rugby coach stopped the game and pulled the entire team off the field…

My mom heart welled with emotion… and immense gratitude… This man had my son’s back, and the back of every other boy in that team…

The game until that point had been extremely “unfair” to say the least. Too many high tackles. Too many offsides. Too many injuries and a biased, militant referee who seemed to need gentle reminding that this was primary school rugby…

Shortly after the start of the second half, I witnessed an event I could never have imagined…

A protective gathering of a team of nine and ten year olds, followed by an incredible coach standing up for his boys and their safety in a heated discussion with the referee…

A coach reminding a ref about what school boy rugby should be focussed on- a fair game… a game where skills are reinforced…. the PLAYERS…

A coach who knew what really should be at the heart of any rugby game… his BOYS…

“This is not how you ref a game. These are kids and for some of them it is their first year of playing rugby. You’re allowing high tackles. They are learning and our role, even in a match, is to teach. I won’t have my boys getting hurt.”

In a tight team huddle off the field, the coach apologized to his boys for pausing the match, and proceeded to chat to them for five minutes…

I didn’t hear what was said in that huddle, but a team of energized boys charged back onto that field and the game went on…

The referee shifted gears, the opponents coach reminded his team not to tackle dangerously…

More fairness, more fun and so much more learning…

But most importantly, these kids could play their hearts out, and give it their all, because they knew they were safe… They knew they had a coach who cared, and they played the rest of that game FOR HIM…

They played for a coach who showed courage and boldness…

They played for a coach who went against the grain, and stopped a match because his kids mattered…

Coaches- No matter what a score board says, playing unfairly will never give you a winning team. Refs- these young kids are still learning the game. Teach them a fair game. Teach them to love the game. And teach them to respect others and themselves by honouring the rules.

After the game I found the coach, and thanked him for what he had done. His words, “I have these kids backs”.

That’s exactly what every parent on the side line wants to hear, and every child in the team needs to feel- A coach who they know has their backs… A coach who they know really cares.

To every phenomenal sports coach out there- that coach who cares so passionately about their players- the one who stands up fiercely for them…

A million mom-heart thank you’s…

“You don’t demand respect. You earn it.” (Unknown)

This coach certainly has mine. 🏉 ♥️

We waited nine months to meet you.
We waited to see you smile, to watch you walk, to hear you talk.

And I'm not sure you realise this but we now wait at the window every day for you to get home.
A home that is filled with all of your things, all of your noise.

But one day we will walk into your bedroom and there won't be clothes all over the floor.
There won't be snacks that you've abandoned in every room and there won't be the noise of some obscure TV show echoing through the house.

Yes, one day our nest will be empty.
Quiet.
Tidy.

You will not need us anymore like you do now.
And that will mean we have done our job.

It will mean we have succeeded
in helping you grow your wings and in teaching you to fly.

And we will enjoy the quiet and the tidiness,
knowing that this is how it is supposed to be.

But we will also miss you. We'll miss the noise and miss the mess that tells us you are here.

So I hope you'll know that you can fly back whenever you want to.
Need to. Wish to.

That you can call us and tell us to put the kettle on
and open the snacks because you'll be here soon.

Because I'm not sure you'll realise this but we'll be here,
waiting to watch you walk through the door with a smile on your face.
Waiting to talk to you about what you've been up to.

Yes, even when you've flown the nest, we will be here.

Always.

Waiting by the window
for you to get home.

******

Waiting by the Window is not in any of my current collections but will be in my next.

This is so very true.... (copied from another post)

Can't take him to the beach for a walk because he bothers you and messes with the holiday... I'm not allowed to rent a house if I have a dog, and I can't take him.
However, I can take him to the rubble to find you after an earthquake, in the woods after you get lost in the mountains and you didn't have neither map nor gps; under snow because you made a detour not allowed off track; in the water because, despite the red flag, you have entered the sea and your life is in danger! And finally ....
It's just a dog, but it will find you.
And it will save you!!!

An elderly woman had two large pots, each hung on
the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot
was perfect and always delivered a full portion of
water. At the end of the long walks from the stream
to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the
woman bringing home only one and a half pots of
water.. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its
accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was
ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that
it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be bitter
failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream.
'I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my
side causes water to leak out all the way back to
your house.'

The old woman smiled, 'Did you notice that there are
flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other
pot's side?' 'That's because I have always known
about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your
side of the path, and every day while we walk back,
you water them.' For two years I have been able to
pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table.
Without you being just the way you are, there would
not be this beauty to grace the house.'

Moral of the story:
Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the
cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives
together so very interesting and rewarding. You've
just got to take each person for what they are and
look for the good in them.
