The S&P 500 looks quiet this year. The underlying market is not. Beneath a calm index, opportunity is lurking.

While the index has traded within roughly 2.7%, the average company has moved about seven times as much. That level of dispersion creates a very different opportunity set than the headline suggests.

When we sit down with families who have meaningful taxable portfolios, this is where strategy becomes nuanced.

Instead of defaulting to a one-size-fits-all index fund, we look for situations where owning the individual companies makes sense — a structure known as Direct Indexing. It helps us to systematically harvest losses, manage embedded gains with intention, and adjust exposures around concentrated positions or legacy holdings, all within a disciplined framework.

Tax filing season opens today. A few quick things we have on our radar:

• Seniors 65+ may qualify for an extra deduction on top of the standard amount.
• Filers in high-tax states may want to revisit itemizing vs. the standard deduction given a higher SALT cap for 2025.
• New car buyers may be able to deduct up to $10,000 of interest paid on qualifying new U.S.-assembled auto loans with details available on your annual interest statement from your lender.

Starting in 2026, catch-up 401(k) contributions for those earning $145,000+ must go into Roth accounts. No upfront deduction, instead after-tax growth if your plan allows.
