Many business owners begin their search for additional quality capital with the financial institution with which they already have an existing relationship. While that can be a logical starting point, it often represents only a small portion of the available financing options.

Banks, SBA lenders, private debt providers, and alternative financing sources all have different underwriting philosophies, industry preferences, risk tolerances, and lending programs. Understanding the marketplace is just as important as understanding the financing itself.

An experienced Capital & Financing Advisor can help business owners leverage established lending relationships and market knowledge to access financing options that may otherwise be overlooked.

Ultimately, the goal isn’t simply to find capital; it’s to identify the right capital solution for your unique business.

While you may not use the term "Enterprise Value Optimization," you may recognize the challenges it is designed to address: feeling overly involved in day-to-day operations, wanting to reduce your role in the business, preparing for a future transition, or building a company that can operate successfully without depending on one individual.

Enterprise Value Optimization is about strengthening a business's financial and operational areas to create greater flexibility for the owner and position the company to achieve its long-term goals.

On the Leaders & Legacies podcast with Craig Andrews, Rob Johnson and Steve Thornton discuss the importance of Enterprise Value Optimization and how financial clarity and operating discipline can help business owners build more scalable and transferable companies.

Strong ex*****on is what ultimately determines whether operational improvements translate into real value.

When a capable management team is in place and supported by clear systems and structure, decision-making becomes more distributed, ex*****on becomes more consistent, and the organization is no longer reliant on the owner to keep everything moving forward.

A business that can operate consistently without relying on a few individuals is inherently more scalable and significantly less risky. That translates directly into stronger outcomes—whether the goal is continued growth, a leadership or management transition, or an eventual sale.

Read our blog, “What Makes a Business Truly Valuable? The Operational Performance Edge Most Owners Miss” to learn more about how improving operational performance and ex*****on can help build a more valuable, scalable business.

For many business owners, SBA loans can offer meaningful benefits. Depending on the program and circumstances, they may provide:

➡️ Longer repayment terms
➡️ Lower down payment requirements
➡️ Competitive rates
➡️ Flexible use of funds

These features can make SBA financing especially useful if you are investing in business growth but want to preserve cash flow.

However, the benefits of an SBA loan do not eliminate the need for a strong application. In many ways, they make preparation even more important.

Because SBA loans are highly sought after, business owners need to be able to clearly explain not only why they need capital, but how that capital will strengthen the business.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) does not lend directly to business owners. Instead, it works with approved lenders and guarantees a portion of qualifying loans, helping reduce risk for lenders and making financing more accessible for businesses that may not qualify under conventional lending standards.

Below are 3 loan programs, each designed for different business needs:

• SBA 7(a) Loan Program – Often used for working capital, business expansion, equipment purchases, refinancing certain debt, buying commercial real estate, or acquiring another business.

• SBA 504 Loan Program – Generally used for larger fixed-asset investments, including owner-occupied commercial real estate, major equipment purchases, and long-term expansion projects.

• SBA Microloan Program – Provides smaller loan amounts, often used by startups, early-stage businesses, or smaller companies needing capital for inventory, supplies, equipment, or working capital.

Understanding which loan program aligns with your business goals is an important first step when exploring SBA financing. Learn more in our latest blog post linked in the comments.
