Juneteenth is more than a date on the calendar—it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, the strength it took to get here, and the importance of learning from our history.

I’ll be honest—I didn’t fully understand the significance of Juneteenth until I became a Texan in 2006 after moving here from California. Learning the history behind June 19, 1865, and its deep roots in Texas gave me a greater appreciation for why this day matters to so many.

I’m grateful that Juneteenth is now recognized as a national holiday, giving all of us an opportunity to reflect, learn, celebrate progress, and honor the resilience of those who came before us.

Today we honor the past, celebrate how far we’ve come, and look ahead with hope for the future.
