Nobody plans to file a claim. Here's what to do when you need to — before you need to.
Step 1: Document everything — photos and video of the damage before you clean up.
Step 2: Contact your agent or carrier immediately — most policies require prompt reporting.
Step 3: Get a claim number and adjuster contact info.
Step 4: Keep receipts for any emergency repairs or temporary housing.
Step 5: Create an inventory of damaged items with approximate values and receipts if available.
Step 6: Cooperate with the adjuster — they need to inspect the damage.
Step 7: Review the settlement offer — you can dispute it if it's too low.
Step 8: If you disagree, file a complaint with TDI.
Keep your policy number and claim number accessible. The process works better when you know the steps.
