A Certificate of Insurance, often called a COI, is a document that summarizes certain insurance coverage a person or business has at the time the certificate is issued.
A COI is not the actual insurance policy.
It does not replace the policy. It does not rewrite the policy. It does not magically create coverage that was not there in the first place.
A certificate shows the coverage in place based on the information available when the agency issued it.
That may sound like a small distinction, but it is a big one.
