Personal auto policies may limit or exclude coverage while a vehicle is being used for rideshare or delivery work. The app may provide some insurance, but that coverage can change depending on whether the driver is waiting, picking someone up, transporting a passenger or completing a delivery.

Do not assume the app’s policy completely replaces your personal auto insurance or fills every possible gap.

Before signing up, tell your agent which app you plan to use and what type of driving you will be doing. Delivering dinner and transporting passengers may not receive the same answer.

Let’s say someone clips your car in a Kansas City parking lot and leaves you with a dent, no note, and a whole lot of irritation. The body shop says the repairs will cost $4,500, and your collision deductible is $500.

Your insurance company may pay $4,000 toward the repair, leaving you responsible for the remaining $500. In most cases, you will pay that amount directly to the body shop before you pick up your vehicle.

So when we say you have to “pay your deductible,” that does not necessarily mean you are writing a check to the insurance company. It usually means you are covering your portion of the repair bill.
