Today we also celebrate Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”). Since 1865, Juneteenth has been observed as a celebration to commemorate the emancipation of slaves in the United States.

On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation officially declared the end of slavery in the United States. However, we don’t celebrate the moment when Black people were declared free from slavery. We celebrate the moment when the last Black people were actually freed from slavery.

This federal holiday references the day when federal troops arrived in the town of Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth as the 12th federal holiday in 2021.
