October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, making it a timely opportunity to ask an increasingly important question: Can we still trust what we see and hear?

Artificial intelligence can now create convincing emails, photographs, videos and even imitate someone’s voice. For years, we told everyone to look for spelling mistakes, awkward wording and things that simply didn’t look right.

Unfortunately, the bad guys discovered spellcheck. And AI.

So the question is no longer simply, “Does this look legitimate?”

It is increasingly, “Can I verify it?”

If someone asks you to transfer money, disclose confidential information, change account information, or do something unusual, verify the request using a method you already trust.

The technology may be changing. The best defense remains surprisingly simple:

STOP. VERIFY. PROCEED.
