There’s a reason I’ve always had such a strong sense of responsibility and work ethic, and a lot of it started with my Dad.

My Dad’s grandfather immigrated from Russia and owned a grocery store in Syracuse, New York. Sadly, he passed away not long after, and my Dad’s grandmother was left to run the business on her own. Her biggest dream was that her grandson would become a doctor, and my Dad carried that dream with him for his entire life.

He became not only a successful physician, but one who was deeply loved by his patients and community. He spent years serving patients at Martin Memorial Hospital before opening his own concierge practice, where he worked for the last 8 years of his career before recently retiring.

And before him was my Papa, Victor, who worked until his 84th birthday. Hard work, dedication, and taking pride in what you do runs deep in our family.

I’m not necessarily trying to glamorize being a workaholic (or am I? 😊KIDDING!), but there is something meaningful about building a career you care deeply about. Something honorable about showing up consistently, taking care of your family, and striving to do your best work over a lifetime.

My Dad has always inspired me to work harder, aim higher, and keep growing. I’m grateful for the example he set and the values he passed down to me.

Honored to be a guest on Thoughtful Money with Adam Taggart for my very first interview!

Thoughtful Money is known for thoughtful, in-depth conversations around markets, the economy, and personal finance, so it was such a fun experience to sit down and talk about one of my favorite (and most overlooked!) topics in retirement planning: distribution planning.

So much of the financial world focuses on how to accumulate wealth, but the reality is that spending, withdrawing, and structuring income in retirement is an entirely different skill set. We discussed the tax side of retirement, withdrawal sequencing, guardrails, Social Security decisions, and how retirees can create a plan that’s designed to adapt over time rather than rely on static rules.

I loved the conversation and appreciated how engaged and curious Adam was throughout the interview. I hope his audience enjoyed the discussion as much as I did! 🙂

Most days, being a working Mom feels like I’m living two full lives at the same time. One where I’m leading meetings, helping clients make huge life decisions, answering emails at all hours, and carrying the weight of a business that means so much to me. And another where I’m packing lunches, cleaning up popsicle drips, hearing about playground drama, and trying so hard to soak in every little moment before these boys grow up too fast.

And if I’m honest, it feels impossible to do either perfectly.

There’s guilt when I miss something. Guilt when I’m distracted. Guilt when I’m working late. Guilt when I step away from work to be fully present at home. It’s like no matter where you are, part of your heart is somewhere else.

But lately, I’ve been trying to look for the silver lining instead of focusing only on the tug-of-war.

My boys get to see what passion looks like. They get to see their Mom build something meaningful from the ground up. They get to see hard work, purpose, resilience, and what it looks like to care deeply about people. And at the same time, my work has made me more intentional with them. More aware of how precious time really is. More grateful for the ordinary moments that would otherwise slip by unnoticed.

I don’t think balance is this perfect, peaceful thing that people talk about online. I think sometimes it just looks like loving two important parts of your life deeply at the same time and doing your best to be present for both.

Some days I nail it. Some days, I cry in the shower. 😅 Most days are somewhere in between.

But these two will always be my greatest accomplishments. ❤️

The “honeymoon problem” is something I see often in retirement.

At first, retirement can feel exciting and freeing. But once the newness starts to wear off, bigger questions can begin creeping in.

Did I retire too early?
What does this next chapter actually look like?
Do I still have purpose and structure in my life?

Because retirement isn’t just a financial transition. It’s an emotional one, too.

Seventeen years ago, I was driving to clients’ homes helping people navigate Medicare plans one kitchen table at a time.

Today, one of my very first clients sent me this photo and email while cleaning out old files and it brought tears to my eyes.

Apparently, I was also very confident back then. Debbie reminded me that after explaining the plan to her husband, he said he wanted to “talk to other people,” and I responded: “Why would you talk to other people? I have the best plan available.” Good to be reminded that I always had some nerve! 😂

What started with helping them choose a Medicare plan eventually grew into helping them with financial planning too. That’s one of the greatest privileges of this profession: getting to walk alongside people through so many different stages of life.

When you’re in the middle of building something, you don’t always realize the impact you’re making or how far you’ve come. You just keep showing up, doing the work, and trying to help people the best you can.

There have been so many long days, difficult decisions, risks, growing pains, and moments where I questioned myself over the years. But messages like this remind me why I started in the first place.

I’m incredibly grateful for every client who has trusted us through some of life’s biggest transitions. It’s never been just about finances or Medicare plans or investments. It’s about helping people feel cared for, understood, and a little less overwhelmed. 💛

We talk a lot about teaching adults how to manage money, but it starts much earlier than that in our house.

We have a morning chore chart (thank you, Skylight!) that covers the basics: getting dressed, brushing teeth, setting the table, clearing dishes, vacuuming, and taking out the recycling.

If the boys follow through each day without too much reminding, they earn $5 for the week. It’s simple, but it’s working.

They each have their own piggy bank, and they can spend their money however they want. Right now, that mostly means trips to buy Pokémon cards. 😄 But that’s part of the lesson. Earning money gives you choices.

We count it together every so often, so they’re getting comfortable with numbers, change, and what things actually cost.

And just as important, we have a tzedakah box. We talk about who we want to help and why. Because understanding money isn’t just about spending it. It’s about using it with intention.

It’s not perfect. There are reminders, negotiations, and moments where “independent” still needs a little supervision. But it’s a start!

And like most things in financial planning, consistency matters more than perfection.

One of the things I see often is that someone can be financially ready to retire… and still feel completely unprepared.

Because retirement isn’t just a financial decision.

It’s a major life transition.

And sometimes preparing emotionally for that change is just as important as preparing financially.
