👉Looking for some tips to prepare your home for extreme heat keeps your family safe and prevents costly HVAC breakdowns. Seal windows and doors with weatherstripping to trap cool air, replace HVAC filters monthly during summer, and utilize heavy drapes or window films to block direct sunlight. Try these, actionable and effective steps to prep your home for a heat wave:

1. HVAC and System Maintenance💙
🔴 Change filters: Dirty filters restrict airflow, forcing your AC unit to work harder and potentially overheat. Change or clean yours every 30 days during peak summer.
🔵 Schedule a Tune-Up: Have a professional inspect your system to ensure coolant levels are adequate and parts are operating efficiently.
🔴 Clear the Condenser: Ensure outdoor units are completely clear of debris, weeds, and landscaping blocks for proper airflow.
🔵 Utilize fans: Set ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise to create a cooling breeze, but never rely on fans as your sole cooling device in temperatures above ≈ 95° F.

2. Window and Door💙
🔴 Weatherization block the Sun: Install blackout curtains or insulated blinds. Keep them tightly closed during the hottest parts of the day.
🔵Seal gaps: Add caulking and weatherstripping around window frames and exterior doors to prevent cool air from escaping.
🔵 Install Window Film: Apply temperature-control, heat-blocking film to single-pane windows.
🔴 Window reflectors: Use specifically designed window reflectors or aluminum foil-covered cardboard to bounce radiant heat back outside.

3. Indoor Heat Reduction💙
🔴 Limit Appliance Use: Avoid using your oven or stove during the day; use slow cookers, microwaves, or air fryers to keep indoor temperatures down.
🔵 Ventilate at Night: When outdoor temperatures drop below indoor temperatures in the evening, open windows on opposite sides of the house to cross-ventilate and release trapped heat.
🔴 Adjust the Thermostat: Set your thermostat to 78° F or higher when you are home, and bump it up to 80° F or 81° F when away.
