If you are one of the people who have messaged us about this law, here it is for you to share, yet again! .... today we shout to the LEFT LANE DRIVERS - move to the right! As troopers, we do our best to enforce all the laws of the state, and many of you ask if we enforce this law..YES - it is heavily enforced by the ASP, but many times it goes unrecognized, due to the fact that we are stopping them from the third lane of traffic.

The biggest issue we face is that most people do not KNOW this law! We need your help in getting the public educated so that they move over and stop irritating other drivers. SHARE this one! Lets see how many people we can reach today. The more people who see this, the more people we get on board!

The law states that you must drive on the right side of the roadway (aka. the right lane). Evidence shows that slowing down and changing lanes is more dangerous than speeding.

According to statistics, lane changes account for 10 percent of highway accidents. Interestingly enough, research has found that the strongest predictor of an accident isn’t actually speeding, but actually variance in the average speed of traffic. Data has found that a car moving five miles slower per hour than the rest of traffic has a greater chance of causing an accident than one that is moving five miles per hour faster.

Impeding traffic falls under Arkansas Law:

27-51-301. Vehicles to be driven on right side of roadway.

(a) Upon all roadways of sufficient width, a vehicle shall be driven upon the right half of the roadway, except as follows:
(1) When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing that movement;
(2) When the right half of a roadway is closed to traffic while under construction or repair;
(3) Upon a roadway divided into three (3) marked lanes for traffic under the rules applicable thereon; or
(4) Upon a roadway designated and signposted for one-way traffic.
(b) Motor vehicles shall not be operated continuously in the left lane of a multi lane roadway whenever it impedes the flow of other traffic.

DID YOU KNOW?? If you have a teenager in your household, or someone that is studying for their Driver License Test, there is only ONE legitimate practice test for the state of Arkansas.

Many teenagers we speak with say they took "all the practices test out there".....unfortunately, that won't help - they need to be taking the right one!

The Arkansas State Police created the Official Driver License Practice Test specifically for OUR states test, with questions directly linked to the study guide. You can download the app on the app store, or through google play. A web based version is also available on our website:

Some tips for safe driving.

Today we are going to cover a "pet peeve" of many drivers - Following too Closely (aka tailgating). PLEASE give each vehicle enough distance, so that if they stop suddenly you have time to react!!

Tailgating is an aggressive driving behavior that is easily mistaken for road rage, which can cause even more issues. Be courteous of the drivers around you, slow down and pay attention!

In the photo below, it explains the two second rule, which is always a good way to know if you are far enough behind the car in front of you - and would be able to react to a sudden stop.

Here are some good tips for leaving a good distance between you, and the car in front of you.

Good Weather – During daylight with good, dry roads and low traffic volume, you can ensure you’re a safe distance from the car ahead of you by following the “two-second rule.” The distance changes at different speeds. To determine the right following distance, first select a fixed object on the road ahead such as a sign, tree or overpass. When the vehicle ahead of you passes the object, slowly count “one one thousand, two one thousand.” If you reach the object before completing the count, you’re following too closely.

Inclement Weather, Heavy Traffic, or Night-Time Driving – In heavy traffic, at night, or when weather conditions are not ideal (eg. light rain, light fog, light snow), double the two second rule to four seconds, for added safety.

Poor Weather – If the weather conditions are very poor, eg. heavy rain, heavy fog, or heavy snow, start by tripling the two second rule to six seconds to determine a safe following distance.

27-51-305 - Following too closely.

(a) The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.

(b) (1) The driver of any motor truck or any motor vehicle drawing another vehicle when traveling upon a roadway outside of a business or residence district shall not follow within two hundred feet (200') of another motor vehicle.

(2) The provisions of this subsection shall not be construed to prevent overtaking and passing.
