Schools Out For Summer (well almost) 🌞 Summertime often means vacation time. It’s a happy, fun time of year – but it’s also a time when you really need to go the extra mile to protect yourself from identity theft.

Some common-sense pointers to make sure that you keep your identity your own:
1️⃣ Never leave your purse or wallet unattended.
2️⃣ Memorize all PINs/passwords. Be aware of your surroundings whenever using an ATM or during any PIN entry situation.
3️⃣ Don’t carry extra credit cards, Social Security cards or other identifying info that you don’t immediately need.
4️⃣ Don’t bring frivolous documentation with you. Talk with a travel professional before you leave and find out what you will and won’t need.
5️⃣ Make two copies of all important papers and keep them in separate areas of your luggage.
6️⃣ Before you leave, contact your post office and have your mail stopped.
7️⃣ Keep a list of the credit cards and personal documentation you’ve brought with you (DON'T list account numbers) and store it in a safe place where you’re staying.
8️⃣ If you discover that some of your personal info is missing, contact the authorities, credit card companies, etc., ASAP.

Help yourself avoid identity theft by following your instincts. Always be aware of your surroundings.

10 Tips for ATM Safety:

1️⃣Keep your PIN private.

2️⃣Check the ATM for a card skimmer: is the card slot feels loose? Colored differently than the rest of the machine? Is the keypad is too thick or does it look newer than the ATM?

3️⃣Bring along a buddy, especially when using an ATM at night.

4️⃣Look for suspicious persons that may be lurking nearby.

5️⃣Use your body as a shield by standing close to the machine and covering the keypad with your free hand while entering your PIN.

6️⃣Have your debit card ready to use before you approach the machine.

7️⃣Put away all cash as soon as you complete your transaction.

8️⃣Lock all doors and roll up passenger windows when using a drive-thru ATM.

9️⃣If you suspect foul play, leave immediately.

🔟Take your receipt if one is provided.

Many teens have summer jobs. This is the ideal time to introduce them to some essential financial skills. The most important skill a young earner can learn is the discipline of setting aside funds for future use. It’s much more fun to spend. Unfortunately, at the end of summer, many teens have little to show for their hard work.

💡Looking to get a handle on your finances and start a budget? Try using the 50/30/20 rule! This helps you split your money between needs, wants and savings so that everything gets covered.

💲Junior Savers: Do your kiddos have money from their first job, birthdays or the holidays? Start them a Juniors Savings Account. Available to Members 11 to 17 years of age.

The good news is that saving can be just as habit-forming as spending. Help your child set some goals. One way would be to save a percentage of net pay. Another would be to help your teen determine a set spending amount for the week and then show him how to save everything else. Discuss dividends and how the pays to hold people’s money. Talk to him about the benefits of compounding dividends – how even the dividends can earn dividends!
