Water in your basement during a big rain… yeah, it sucks. I’ll be the first to admit—we were dealing with it ourselves after that last storm.

All it took was a clogged downspout, and suddenly water was making its way right into the basement. Luckily, ours is unfinished so no real damage… but still not something you want to see.

Fast forward a few weeks and I get the reminder from my wife: I never actually fixed it. So now here I am, unhooking the downspout and making a last-minute run to Theisens for a new drain tile setup before the next rain hits.

So if any of my neighbors saw me scrambling around the yard… just know I wasn’t landscaping—I was racing the weather.

As an insurance broker, I see this all the time—small maintenance items can turn into bigger headaches if they’re ignored. Quick reminder from someone who learned the hard way: make sure your downspouts are clear and pushing water away from the house.

Today was a special day for us at The Avanti Group.

We had the opportunity to celebrate our ribbon cutting with PACE, and it was a great reminder that what we’re building is about so much more than insurance. The Avanti Group is about family, friendships, and being part of something bigger than ourselves.

Our goal has always been to be a true partner to small businesses and a positive force in the community.

Being raised here in Pella, then coming back after college, I’ve always had the same goal — to get involved, help move our community forward, and support local businesses in growing and succeeding.

Today felt like a meaningful step in that journey.

Through the Dutch Greeters event, we were surrounded by friends, family, and community members who have supported us along the way. It was a great reminder of how special this place truly is.

Rich and I both grew up here and graduated from Pella High together. Pella has always meant a lot to us, and I’m proud to call it home.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support us — we’re just getting started.

False Spring: The Season That Tricks All of Us

Every year it happens.

We get a few beautiful warm days and suddenly it feels like winter is behind us. Windows open, grills come out of hibernation, and for many of us… the AC gets turned on for the first time.

Of course, here in the Midwest we all know what this really is.

False spring.

Even if winter isn’t quite done with us yet, those warm days are actually a good reminder to take a quick look at your air conditioning system before the real heat shows up.

A few quick checks can go a long way:

• Replace the air filter – A fresh filter helps the system run efficiently after sitting all winter.
• Check the condensate drain line – AC systems create condensation, and a clogged line can lead to water backing up into the home.
• Clear debris around the outdoor unit – Leaves and winter buildup can block airflow and make the system work harder than it should.
• Run the system for a few minutes – It’s better to discover an issue now than on the first 90° day of summer.

From an insurance perspective, a surprising number of home claims start with small maintenance issues that turn into water damage or system failures.

Something I don’t always prioritize is promoting the work I do, but many people in Pella Area Community & Economic Alliance know I wear a lot of hats. Most days feel like a revolving door of responsibilities—helping someone plan an unforgettable trip through Bluewater Travelers, supporting clients through the Avanti Group with their insurance needs, or ordering special-release discs for Dutchman Disc Golf.

Even with all the variety, one thing never changes: my commitment to the customer. No matter the size of the trip or the complexity of the policy, my priority is always to put the customer’s needs first.

As we wind down 2025 and begin setting goals for 2026, that commitment remains the foundation of everything I do.
