We bring together individual bankers from all over the state to gather and exchange ideas on the business of banking and to promote and uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics within the banking industry. This week’s IBA Member Spotlight highlights Abbi Lafrenz with First Trust and Savings Bank!

As a loan officer at First Trust and Savings Bank, Abbi Lafrenz believes in treating everyone with kindness and respect. A piece of career advice that has stuck with her is, “People don’t always remember exactly what you said or did; they remember how you made them feel.” If she could become an expert in any subject, Lafrenz would choose the stock market, a topic that has always fascinated her. Having grown up on a cattle farm, she hopes to one day have a cattle operation of her own. Outside of work, she enjoys wake surfing on the lake during the summer and baking year round — especially pies.

Community Savings Bank recently donated $5,000 to the NICC Foundation as part of a five-year, $25,000 Fund for Excellence Endowment commitment. The NICC “Fund for Excellence” is an unrestricted donor gift program that supports student needs in the areas of greatest need, while the NICC Endowment Fund is a separate, long‑term charitable investment that funds the college’s charitable activities and promotes student success.

Yesterday, the 2025-26 Leaders in Advocacy completed the nine-month program by presenting their bank advocacy plans. ✅

Throughout the program, the class made multiple visits to the Iowa State Capitol, a trip to Washington, D.C., deepened their knowledge of industry issues, and built strong relationships with legislators. 🏛️

This week’s IBA Member Spotlight highlights Kenedy Backes with
Bankers Trust Company!

Kenedy Backes describes herself as a “storyteller” in her role as credit portfolio manager for Bankers Trust, where she works to uncover and explain the gray area behind the numbers. For Backes, financial analysis isn’t always black and white; it’s about understanding the full story. While she’s always eager to learn, take on new challenges, and keep moving forward, she says the best career advice she’s received is to be patient and not rush the season you’re in. A seasoned international traveler, Backes spent 10 months teaching English in a small town in Spain. Outside the bank, she enjoys biking around town and exploring with friends and family.
