"Meanwhile, back at the ranch..." See how life insurance kept this family's dream alive during the worst of circumstances.

Scott Young liked to dream big. Although he came from humble beginnings, through hard work he turned a one-man enterprise into the largest heating and air conditioning business in the county. That allowed Scott and his wife, Cathy, to fulfill another dream—to build a home in the country and work it as a hobby ranch. They wanted to give their two daughters a life that revolved around the outdoors and good living. Insurance agent Steve Sabo made sure Scott was properly insured at work and at home. It was close to 11 p.m. the December night when boxer Oscar de la Hoya lost his fight to Manny Pacquiao. The Virgens were saying goodbye to their extended family after watching the match together. Still basking in the glow of family and good food, they headed off to their Port Hueneme, Calif., house. On the way, their pickup truck was slammed by a hit-and-run driver. Nicolas had three broken vertebrae and multiple fractures in his arms. “In one second your life changes, Nicolas says. After their injuries were tended to, the Virgens started picking up the pieces. Thankfully Teresa had life insurance to help them do it. Initially the couple wasn’t convinced that Teresa needed a policy of her own since she did not work outside the home. As a building contractor...

When John Butcher needed a liver transplant, his wife, Kara, was always by his side. In addition to caring for him, Kara worked at the Amarillo Country Club, which kept the family afloat. About a year after the transplant, life was looking up again. John made a full recovery and was back at work. Kara still worked at the country club and 6-year-old Tre was pursuing his interest in acting. John’s friends and family immediately swarmed him with support. One evening as she was preparing dinner, Kara, 37, collapsed in the kitchen due to an undiagnosed heart condition called cardiac tamponade. She died almost instantly. John’s friends and family immediately swarmed him with support. He needed it. “The day after Kara died, I went to dress Tre, but realized I had no idea where any of his clothes were, he recalls. “Kara took care of all of that. Among the condolence calls John received was one from Helen Rodriguez-Burton, his insurance agent. A year earlier, Helen had met Kara at a...
