Several retirement tax rules turn on exact income thresholds. A conversion sized without them in view can cross one by a small amount and change the year's bill.

Picture two ATMs in your house, printing money every month once you're both on Social Security. One prints a bigger check, one prints a smaller one. When either of you passes away, the smaller ATM breaks and the larger one keeps going. That's why it's worth making one of your Social Security checks as large as you possibly can.

Retirement money works best when every dollar has a job.

While you're working, what you save goes into long-term money and grows. As retirement gets closer, some of that growth moves down the line, a little at a time, until three silos are built: one that pays you every month, one that refills it, and one that keeps growing.

I think about a client from early in my career. She lived to 108, in Italy I believe, with a b**r a day and a pack of ci******es a day, and she'd started her pension around 55. She ended up collecting it for more than fifty years. The single life option pays the most if you live a long time, so it only makes sense once you're honest about how long you expect to be around.

Moving states does not apply the old state's rate to every dollar you have. Which income is taxed, and where, is the question that matters.

So often, retirement planning is about giving someone permission to spend.

We work through the numbers and figure out how much room they actually have. Sometimes that means they can take the trip they’ve been putting off, buy their wife that slightly ridiculous thing she’d love, or get the whole family together while everyone can still enjoy it.

After years of saving and being careful, it can be hard to give yourself permission to do those things. Seeing what you can afford helps.

Honestly, that’s one of the most rewarding and fun parts of my job.

When people retire, they usually want to retreat into safety, and for a lot of people that makes real sense. The trouble is some retreat further than they actually need to. Turning that dial up just a little, while staying just as comfortable, is worth being precise about. Risk tolerance sounds like a compliance thing and gets eye-rolled at because of it, but in my experience it's a much bigger deal than that.

The back-of-the-envelope number for moving to a no-income-tax state rarely survives the full picture. Here is what the simple math leaves out.

A pension that was taxed by your old state is not taxed by Tennessee. What that does and does not change about the rest of your plan.

Here's something that surprises a lot of people getting close to retirement: retiring and claiming Social Security are not the same decision.

You can retire at 62 and choose to claim any time between then and age 70. 63, 64, 65, even 64 and three months. It's your call, based on your own numbers.

This is a decision worth getting right. We talk through it with clients all the time.
