‘Tis the Season’ for Automobile Accidents Involving Wildlife on Idaho Roadways
Colder fall temperatures increase the risk of encountering deer, elk and other wildlife

BOISE, ID – An increased potential for vehicular accidents involving deer and elk on Idaho roadways occurs during fall when cooler weather encourages wildlife activity. The Idaho Department of Insurance urges drivers to always drive with caution and to be on the lookout for animals on the roadway, most particularly during dawn and dusk when wildlife tends to be more active

During this time, deer and elk naturally migrate to lower, warmer elevations, increasing their chances of crossing paths with a vehicle on the road. Deer, elk and other wildlife tend to travel in herds, so if you see one, others may follow. According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHSA), about 1.5 million deer-related auto accidents happen nationwide each year, resulting in more than $1 billion in annual insured losses.

“Driving requires your full attention, most especially in rural areas or near migration routes where wildlife can make their way onto open roadways,” said Director Dean Cameron. “It’s also important to review your auto policy and make sure you have proper coverage that can protect your loved ones and other drivers.”

‘Comprehensive’ coverage and not liability or collision is the portion of an automobile policy that Department officials say will pay for auto damages caused by wildlife. Filing a claim for an accident covered by comprehensive coverage may still require paying a deductible before the insurer will cover the cost of the claim up to the policy limit. Contact your insurance agent to discuss adding comprehensive coverage that will cover animal collisions. Always be sure to take photos or video of any damage to support an insurance claim.

Saving Lives the Prime Goal of National Fire Prevention Week
“Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware – fire can happen anywhere.”

BOISE, ID – Reducing the risk of fire and being prepared in the event of one is the emphasis of National Fire Prevention Week, October 7 through October 13. The Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office joins fire departments nationwide to stress the importance of this year’s theme: “look for places fires can start; listen for the sound of a smoke alarm; and learn two ways out of each room.” These essential calls-to-action can help protect your home and loved ones.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), 80 percent of fire-related deaths occur in homes. Cooking is considered the leading cause of home fires, and NFPA statistics indicate that people are 10 percent more likely to die in a home fire today than they were in 1980. More alarming, 3 of 5 home fire deaths happen in a dwelling with no smoke alarms.

“Working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of dying in a home fire in half,” said State Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl. “These highly effective devices provide the best defense from becoming a statistic and give people added time to safely escape a burning building.”

Missing or dead batteries, or devices that have been disconnected are the leading cause of smoke alarms that fail. In 2018, the Idaho State Fire Marshal investigated five fires that resulted in six fatalities. In all five cases, no working smoke alarm present was present.

Marshal Sandahl says fire safety should never be taken for granted, and that “it’s never too late to plan ahead, devise an escape plan and make a commitment to fire safety in your home.”
National Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, a blaze that killed more than 250 people, destroyed over 17,000 structures and left at least 100,000 homeless.

Most people aren't prepared for retirement and are planning on Social Security as their main income later in life. Now is the time to invest in YOUR future and start setting some money aside. Even if it's just a little bit, at least it's something. If you aren't sure what to do or how to do it, get with me and I can show some options that are a whole lot cheaper than you think. National Retirement Planning Week April 9-13

BOISE ID (April 6, 2018) –Estimating how much money is needed for retirement can be confusing and challenging. This is why the Idaho Department of Insurance, the Idaho Department of Finance, and PERSI have united to support National Retirement Planning Week and urge consumers to begin preparing financially for retirement. The theme of this week of planning is Retirement.

“No matter how old you are, it is still possible to rethink retirement and retire on your own terms by making plans that are well developed and managed. Being proactive and routinely assessing your financial and insurance preparedness are good steps to take towards the goal of a financially secure and dignified retirement,” said Department of Insurance Director Dean Cameron.

For example, heath care expenses need to be calculated into retirement financial plans, and yet reports show that only 18% of Baby Boomers adequately estimate this expense. It is important to visit with a financial advisor and your insurance agent to get advice on structuring you retirement plans and needs.

“Continuous learning and inquiry are the keys to financial freedom,” said Gavin Gee, Director of the Idaho Department of Finance. “Idahoans can help ensure a brighter financial future by making a lifelong commitment to stay in tune with their financial fitness.”

Planning for your retirement by developing a long term financial plan can help establish security and better preparedness for the post-working years. “PERSI believes whether you are a public employee or not, through education, planning, and saving, all Idahoans can build a secure retirement. We are proud to partner with the Departments of Insurance and Finance, to encourage all Idahoans to start planning and saving today for their retirement,” said PERSI Executive Director Don Drum.

The following resources are available to help consumers comprehensively plan for retirement and plan for their future financial needs:
• During the month of April, the Department of Finance will distribute a “Financial Literacy Tip of the Week.” Look for these on their website at www.finance.idaho.gov
• The Department of Finance also makes available a host of resources free of charge, including information about home buying; wise use of credit; identifying and avoiding investment fraud; how to select a financial professional and much more.
• The Department of Insurance will post “Retirement Planning Tips and Resources,” including how to confirm licensing of insurance agents and companies, at www.doi.idaho.gov.
• Consumer Affairs Officers from the Department of Insurance are available to help consumers with questions or concerns about life insurance or any insurance-related products. For assistance call 334-4250 in the Boise area and 800-721-3272 toll-free statewide.

Hope you get a chuckle out of this...

"Do you know the present value of your husband´s policy?" the life insurance salesman asked his client.

"What do you mean?" countered the woman.

"If you should lose your husband, what would you get?" asked the salesman.

The woman thought a minute, then brightened up and said, "Probably a poodle."
