Almost every business accepts debit/credit card payments, as well at ACH (e-checks or electronic checks), but when you start talking about rates, costs, fees, equipment, etc. comparing programs and companies quickly becomes Apples to Oranges - they are all sort of the same, but all different.

A lot of credit card processing and payment platform professionals and pushing "0% Credit Card Processing" - but what is it exactly and is it a good option for a law firm?

First - there is no such thing as "0% Credit Card Processing".

Processing fees run from just under 2% to more than 4% - and someone has to pay those fees. Traditionally, it has been the business that absorbs the fees as a cost of doing business, but the new "0% Credit Card Processing" shifts the burden of paying those fees to the person using the card to make payment in the form of an added surcharge or convenience fee.

As a law firm, it means shifting fees traditionally absorbed by your firm to your clients.

The question you must ask - is it worth saving an average of 3% of each invoice paid with a credit card to risk upsetting, maybe even losing, long-term clients or potential clients, by asking them to pay the processing fees for credit card use traditionally paid by the firm, in addition to what are already significantly large invoices.

While not forbidding "fee-shifting", the ABA and a number of state bar associations feel fee-shifting tarnishes the image of a law firm by making it appear they are trying to "nickel and dime" their clients.

IOLTA (trust) account rules often forbid a firm from charging a client a processing fee or convenience fee in excess of the actual fee charged in each specific payment, so you can't just pick a percentage of 3% or 4% and charge that every time a card is used without risking violating IOLTA rules in your state.
