This is the time of the year when a lot of people set goals for the new year coming up and a lot of folks, me included poke a little fun at the process, but the truth is without goals none of us would ever grow. Many people fall off the resolution wagon pretty because life usually gets in the way. We insure ourselves with health and auto insurance but life comes at us in so many more directions.

Grandparents create "A Chain of Love"

The passing of our loved ones is something that we each and every one will have to face. Even if we have watched our loved one suffer with health issues, or they have lived a long, blessed life it is still a difficult time of grief and trying to adjust to life without them. I have lived long enough to know that we don't all live until we are old, wrinkled, and hopefully much wiser. We don't all get to go to sleep one night and wake up in Heaven the next morning. I have witnessed friends and family leave this world for many years now, and sadly to say some of those graves were much smaller than others. Death does not respect age, and sometimes the unthinkable does happen and we are confronted with saying goodbye to someone who in our opinion was much too young.
Mawmaw, Pawpaw, Granddad, Grandma, or in my case Papaw and Nonnie, we have witnessed a lot in our lives, and some of it is heartbreaking. I have started this chain of love for our grands. I hope they never have to use it, and it can be a financial blessing to my great-grands. There are many benefits to purchasing a life insurance policy for your grandchildren. A whole life policy builds value over time and should the need arises for college money one day, the policy can be used as collateral. It brings peace of mind, knowing that should the unthinkable happen, our children won't have to deal with the added financial burden brought about by an untimely passing.

It is officially Fall here in Alabama, I know with 90 degree temps all week it doesn't feel like it, but it is. With the arrival of fall that means that Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. It is a time of many celebrations, but October brings with it a reminder that many folks have difficulty celebrating because they are in the fight of their lives. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I want to give you a few statistics today.

1. You have a 1 in 1200 chance of experiencing a house fire.
2. You have a 1 in 47 chance of having to use your auto insurance.
3. If you are a female, you have a 1 in 3 chance of developing cancer.
4. If you are a male, you have a 1 in 2 chance of developing cancer.

Most of us protect our homes and it's contents. Most of purchase automobile insurance. These are wise purchases that help protect us financially against catastrophic losses. We do it for peace of mind and security. But, we don't want to think that cancer or heart disease will ever happen to us.

Can you think of anything more catastrophic than your doctor entering your room and hearing the word cancer come from his/her mouth?

Look at these odds one more time. Women basically have a 1/3 chance and men have a 1/2 chance of developing cancer. That is one third of women and half of men will develop some form of cancer. I hear all the time that people have life insurance at work. That is a wonderful benefit for your employer to offer, but it is probably a group term policy and when you leave that job you leave that benefit.

Term insurance has some good applications, like helping to cover your family against debt should you pass. But term insurance is temporary insurance. Generally one of two things happens with term insurance. Your premiums increase every year or your coverage decreases. Term insurance does have some practical applications, but it is not a whole life product.

Whole life policies are there to add some permanent security. Most of them have specific time frames in which they pay up and you then have the coverage until you or your family needs it. Most Whole life policies build cash value that you can use should the need arise in the future.

Listen to a word of advice from an overweight, balding, out of shape, middle aged man. Life insurance is much cheaper when you are in your twenties than it is in your fifties. You may be thinking that I don't need it or I can't afford it, but if you are smart you will purchase it when you are young.
