Great article by Coker Law's Lindsay Tygart on the significance of discussing all settlement options with injured clients.

"Sometimes, [a successful settlement or verdict] may be the only opportunity an injured child or adult will have to access quality medical treatment and finance the burden of living with his or her injury. It is our responsibility to discuss all settlement options and give our clients the best opportunity for post settlement success."

Placing a portion of the settlement funds inside of a structure can protect the injured from a number of things, including lawsuits or tax liens.

Although interest rates are not as high as volatile investments, this special annuity is meant to protect the settlement dollars so it is there for an injured person's future.

Stuctured settlements are special in that they are not owned and considered a protected investment; structures are protected from anyone and/or any entity. No one will know the annuity exists and no one can take or attach a lien the funds.

Traditional investments, such as an IRA, are considered "owned," and potentially at risk for being taken through lawsuits or liens.

I find clients enjoy the security of knowing that the funds will always be there - regardless if any financial matters arise in the future.
