North Carolina's hurricane season is here.

From the NC coast to communities across the Southeastern US, one storm can create multiple insurance questions.

Wind damage, flood damage, deductibles, and loss of use coverage may all be handled differently, even when they stem from the same event.

The best time to understand how your coverage works is before a named storm appears on the forecast.

Most people assume that if someone gets hurt in their pool, coverage automatically applies.

But that’s not how liability works.

When a pool injury happens, coverage depends on things like:
• What led to the injury
• Whether reasonable precautions were taken
• Who is legally responsible

That means two similar situations can be handled very differently.
Understanding that before something happens is what helps avoid issues after.

Most people think the biggest risk is the pool itself.

In reality, what drives most claims isn’t the equipment, it’s injuries involving guests, kids, and everyday activity around the pool.
Slip and falls, diving injuries, and crowded summer use are what increase exposure.

That’s why understanding how liability coverage actually works matters more than most people realize.

After hurricanes, the most common issues involve learning that:
• Deductibles are often percentage‑based for named storms
• Wind, rain, and flooding are treated as separate causes of loss
• Coverage depends on how damage occurred, not just that a storm caused it
• Different parts of the same loss may be handled differently

These aren’t exceptions, they reflect how insurance is structured to respond.

Full breakdown in the comments, including why coverage can differ within the same loss.

In many policies, things like sheds, fences, decks, and detached buildings are treated as a separate category, often with different limits and conditions than the primary structure.

How they’re covered depends on how the policy is written and how those structures are classified.

Because this part of a policy usually isn’t revisited until damage happens, the difference can be surprising when an exterior claim is reviewed.

Understanding how external structures are addressed helps make sense of why coverage for them doesn’t always mirror the main building.

A fire starts in your home.
It begins in the laundry room.

Your first thought is it will be covered under your home insurance.
But what caused the fire matters.

If it started from a clogged dryer vent that built up over time, that can factor into how the insurance claim is handled.

It can affect how the claim is handled and how much is covered.

We explain this in more detail here: Article link in the first comment.

A storm hits and water gets into a home.
From the outside, it looks like storm damage.
But if there was already wear on the roof, that becomes part of the insurance decision.
That’s what changes how the insurance claim is handled.
The same idea applies across the home, plumbing, exterior, drainage.
How the damage starts matters just as much as what it looks like at the end.
