"Nopetro opens CNG fueling facility in St. Johns County
Compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure provider Nopetro opened a new CNG fueling facility at the St. Johns County Public Works facility in St. Augustine last week.
The two-acre facility – which will serve both county-owned commercial vehicles and the general public – features a four-lane fueling station capable of being expanded to six lanes as well as two dual-hose dispensers with the capacity to distribute more than 12 gallons per minute.
As part of a public-private partnership with St. Johns County, Nopetro paid for the construction of the facility and will oversee its operation and maintenance. In addition, the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization provided St. Johns County with $732,000 toward the cost of retrofitting approximately 130 CNG fleet vehicles. According to county officials, switching from diesel to CNG is expected to reduce emissions significantly while saving more than $6 million over the next 20 years.
“We are excited about our public-private partnership with Nopetro,” St. Johns County Public Works Director Neal Shinkre said. “The (agreement) provides county taxpayers the opportunity to save money without having to make the large infrastructure investments that would normally be required in similar size projects.”
