One of the most common boating insurance conversations we have this time of year?

"My homeowners insurance covers my boat, right?"

Sometimes.

But usually not in the way people think.

Depending on the type of boat, the value, the horsepower, and what actually happens, homeowners insurance may provide very limited coverage (or none at all).

And that's where people get caught off guard.

Because the assumption is:
"I have insurance."

The better question is:
**Which insurance is actually doing the work?**

With boating season picking up around the beaches, it's a good time to know the answer before you need it.

(Especially before your friend who always says "we'll be fine" takes the wheel.)

Most homeowners don’t start thinking about hurricane insurance until a storm gets named.

That’s usually when people discover:

flood damage isn’t covered the way they thought
hurricane deductibles work differently
or small gaps in coverage can turn into expensive surprises

The best time to review your policy is before hurricane season ramps up — not when everyone’s rushing to prepare at the same time.

We put together a practical guide covering:
āœ” flood vs. wind damage
āœ” hurricane deductibles
āœ” roof age & insurability
āœ” temporary living expenses
āœ” common coverage gaps Florida homeowners overlook

A little preparation now can go a long way later.

Memorial Day weekend around the beaches usually looks a little something like this:

Boats out early.
Bikes everywhere.
Beach chairs claimed by 9AM.
Traffic nobody was emotionally prepared for.

We hope everyone has a fun, safe weekend with good weather, good people, and a little extra appreciation for the reason behind the holiday.

And if you’re heading out around town this weekend, maybe pack a little patience too.

One of the biggest insurance conversations in Florida right now?

Roofs.

Not because everyone suddenly has a leak, but because roof age can affect a lot more than people expect when it comes to coverage and carrier options.

And around hurricane season, those conversations tend to get more important pretty quickly.

We’ve had more than a few homeowners say:
ā€œBut the roof still looks fine.ā€

And honestly, they’re usually not wrong.

The challenge is that insurance companies are often looking at:
• age
• materials
• inspection reports
• remaining life expectancy
not just visible condition.

Which is why this is one of those things that’s much easier to understand before it turns into a time-sensitive decision.

Especially in Florida.

Hurricane season is making headlines again because forecasters are predicting an ā€œabove averageā€ season for 2026 due to warm waters, along with the expected return of El NiƱo conditions: a combination that historically influences hurricane activity in the Southeast.

And around Florida, that tends to get people’s attention pretty quickly.

But here’s the important part:
šŸŒŖļø Predictions don’t guarantee what kind of season we’ll have locally.

What they *do* usually impact is awareness and hopefully preparation.

Because every year, we end up having a lot of the same conversations:
ā€œI thought flood was included.ā€
ā€œWe were going to look at it later.ā€
ā€œWait… that deductible is how much?ā€

That’s why this time of year matters.

Not for panic.
Just for clarity before hurricane season starts getting interesting.

Live music, local vendors, closed streets, and at least one person dancing like no one from work is watching. šŸ•ŗ

Sounds like Dancing in the Streets in Atlantic Beach this weekend.
One of the many reasons we love living and working around the beaches.

Have fun, stay safe, and maybe keep the dance moves slightly less risky than your insurance deductible.

One of the biggest hurricane season surprises?

The deductible.

A lot of people assume it works like a normal insurance deductible:
flat amount, straightforward, easy enough.

But hurricane deductibles in Florida are often percentage-based, meaning the number changes based on the value of the home.

And during a real storm claim, that difference can get very real very quickly.

It’s also one of those things people usually don’t find out about until there’s a storm involved... because no one ever really walked them through it.

That’s why these conversations matter before the season picks up.

No panic. No scare tactics.
Just making sure everything actually makes sense before you have to rely on it.

If you’re not completely sure how your hurricane deductible works, now’s probably a good time to ask.

Live music at the Pavilion.
šŸŽ¶ Seawalk Sessions tonight 6-8pm

Good weather.
Calm water.
Everything behaving the way it should.

Which, around here, is usually your window.

Enjoy it while it’s easy,
before things get a little more Florida… (you know, storms and all).

This time of year around Jacksonville Beach tends to feel pretty calm.

Which is usually when we start having conversations about hurricane season that start to sound pretty familiar:

ā€œDo I know what my hurricane deductible actually is?ā€
ā€œDoes my policy cover this… or is that something separate?ā€
ā€œAre we good where we’re at, or am I missing something?ā€

Nothing complicated, just questions that don’t always come up until they need to.

One of the biggest things we see each year is timing.

A lot of people wait until a storm is on the radar to take a closer look.

By then, options can be more limited than expected, and decisions tend to feel a little more rushed.

This time of year gives you the opposite of that: a chance to get clear on things while everything still feels easy.

That usually starts with taking a closer look at what you already have
and talking it through before you have to rely on it.

This is the part of the year that makes living here look easy.

Good weather, calm water, and not much to worry about.

We like this part. šŸ˜Ž

It’s also when we quietly suggest getting a step ahead,
before things get a little more… Florida.
