Gift Tax!

Any time we're talking to clients about giving money to their children or other family members, one of the first comments we hear is:

“I can only give them $19,000 this year… right?”

or:

“I don’t want them to have to pay taxes on it.”

It’s clear that gift tax is one of the most misunderstood parts of the tax code.

Here’s the simple version:

In 2026, you can give $19,000 per person without even dipping into your lifetime gift and estate tax exemption.

Give someone more than $19,000? That does not mean you owe tax.
It just means you may need to file a gift tax return and report the amount above $19,000 against your lifetime exemption.

In 2026, that lifetime exemption is $15 million per person, potentially $30 million for a married couple.

So, if you’re like 99% of American households, please don't let gift tax keep you from supporting your family.
