Cody Jinks announced his 2025 Hippies and Cowboys Tour alongside his upcoming project, Cody Jinks Sings Lefty Frizzell, a tribute album to the late honky-tonk legend, Lefty Frizzell which includes covers of many fan-favorite tracks including, “If You’ve Got The Money I’ve Got The Time.” Giving the songs new life, Jinks takes the music, a cornerstone of traditional country and honky-tonk and makes it his own with the same sincerity and emotional depth that captured fans throughout Lefty’s career.

“It’s a really divided time in our nation,” Jinks says. “But we’ve always been the type of band where we’ve wanted everybody. And so next year, it’s going to be a statement of, ‘Man, we’re just an American band.’ That’s what we are. We’re a honky-tonk band. We’re American music. You have country rock, rhythm and blues, all in one. We’re hippies, we’re cowboys—and we’re everything in between.”

The upcoming tour includes a stops in Franklin, TN, at the First Band Amphitheater. GET TICKETS HERE .

To date he’s released ten full-length albums that regularly chart near the top of Billboard Country and Independent albums charts and have staying power, to the tune of 3.5 billion streams across platforms and eight songs certified Platinum or Gold. This weekend, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum hosted a songwriter round honoring singer-songwriter David Olney. The program included tribute performances by Steve Earle, Mary Gauthier, Jaimee Harris and Jim Lauderdale.

Singer-songwriter Olney, who died in 2020, released more than two dozen albums during his five-decade career as both a solo artist and a member of the Nashville Jug Band and the X-Rays. His songs have been recorded by Kieran Kane, Del McCoury, Linda Ronstadt, Townes Van Zandt and Country Music Hall of Fame member Emmylou Harris. New West Records recently released Can’t Steal My Fire: The Songs of David Olney — a tribute album featuring Earle, Gauthier, Lauderdale, the McCrary Sisters, Buddy Miller, the SteelDrivers, Lucinda Williams and others.

In the early 1980s, he recorded two albums for Rounder Records with The X-Rays. The group appeared on Austin City Limits, opened for major acts, including Elvis Costello, and broke up in 1985.

Olney died of an apparent heart attack during a performance onstage at the 30A Songwriter Festival in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, on January 18, 2020, at the age of seventy-one. He was in the middle of his third song when he stopped, apologized and shut his eyes, according to fellow musician Scott Miller, who was accompanying Olney.

The Expedition 72 crew is packing a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft ahead of its departure later this week. The seven astronauts and cosmonauts also kept up a variety of space biology and lab maintenance tasks aboard the International Space Station on Monday.

Cargo packing is at the top of the schedule this week as the SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft nears its undocking targeted for 11:05 a.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 5. NASA’s live coverage of undocking and departure begins at 10:50 a.m. EST on NASA+ . Learn how to watch NASA content through a variety of platforms, including social media.

Commander Suni Williams and Flight Engineer Don Pettit joined forces on Monday morning loading Dragon with return cargo as it prepares to depart the Harmony module’s forward port after being docked for one month. Pettit then worked with Flight Engineer Nick Hague during the afternoon strapping down the hardware inside Dragon. The trio plus Flight Engineer Butch Wilmore will work during the week stowing critical research samples and finalized experiments inside the spacecraft for analysis in labs on Earth.

The four NASA astronauts also continued their regularly scheduled research objectives studying space biology and servicing a host of science equipment. Williams with assistance from Wilmore activated mixing tubes supporting student-designed experiments that observe how microgravity affects proteins and bacteria potentially benefitting human health on and off the Earth. Williams also processed bacteria and yeast samples for a biomanufacturing study possibly enabling the production of food and medicine in space. Pettit spun his blood sample in a centrifuge then stowed it in a science freezer for later analysis. Hague installed the Multi-Purpose Experiment Platform, a device that can deploy scientific payloads in the vacuum of space, into the Kibo laboratory module ’s airlock.

Working in the Roscosmos segment of the orbital outpost, cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov unloaded cargo from the Progress 90 resupply ship that docked to the Zvezda service module ’s rear port on Nov. 23 . He also set up imaging hardware to view natural and human-caused conditions on Earth using different wavelengths. Flight Engineers Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner partnered together throughout Monday servicing communications, computer, and electronics hardware in Zvezda.

Parmalee, Country radio’s most played band of 2023, scored their 5th #1 single with “Gonna Love You.” (listen above) This marks the 4th consecutive #1 single for the band, who performed the song on Good Morning America and The Kelly Clarkson Show earlier this year.

“Having ‘Gonna Love You’ go #1 is special in so many ways,” the band said. “We took a shot with a song completely different from the previous three (we released), and it really connected. Also, this was the song we needed to help tell our story and ultimately film the music video. As difficult as it was on the video set, it was a way to move on, and now we can all celebrate this song and how far we’ve come.”

The North Carolina natives recently performed at the “Concert For Carolina” benefit, which raised more than $25 million for Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Parmalee is comprised of brothers Matt and Scott Thomas (lead vocals/guitar and drums, respectively), cousin Barry Knox (bass), and lifelong friend Josh McSwain (guitar/keyboard).

While the band is winding the year with another chart-topping single, they are already prepping for their recently announced “Fell In Love With A Cowgirl” Tour, which kicks off February 13 in Madison, WI. The tour, featuring special guest Avery Anna, will conclude on March 22 in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

“With new music coming early next year, there is energy and excitement around us and our whole team,” said lead singer Matt Thomas. “We wanted to bring that energy to our fans as soon as we could, so we decided to do a headline tour starting in Feb 2025. We’ll bring the party back to some of the cities we played on the Kane Brown tour as well as some cities we’ve never been to. Can’t wait to kick off 2025 with the Parmlee Famalee.”

NASA astronaut and Expedition 72 Flight Engineer Nick Hague services samples of the Arthrospira C micro-algae for incubation and analysis.

The Expedition 72 crew is back to work following a day off yesterday to observe the Thanksgiving holiday. Space botany experiment prep and cargo operations topped Friday’s schedule aboard the International Space Station as three NASA astronauts prepped the SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft for return and another installed science gear that will assess how plants respond to different levels of water.

NASA Flight Engineers Nick Hague , Don Pettit , and Butch Wilmore spent some of the day packing gear for return to Earth inside the SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft, which is set to undock from the Harmony module’s forward port on Thursday, Dec. 5. Dragon arrived to the orbiting lab on Nov. 5 , delivering over 6,000 pounds of science and cargo to the crew.

Pettit also penciled in some time to answer questions about life in orbit during an amateur radio call with students in Caltanissetta, Italy. Meanwhile, after Wednesday’s processing of radiant-resistant Arthrospira C micro-algae samples, Hague removed the four sample containers and swapped in a new set to the BioLab Incubator . The samples will be exposed to different light intensities to observe how they affect the micro-algae’s cell growth, which could advance spacecraft life support system development and fresh food production on future space missions.

In the Harmony module, station Commander Suni Williams started her day by gathering hardware for future Advanced Plant Habitat operations. She then collected water samples from the device’s distribution reservoir before installing the Plant Habitat-07 science carrier. The science carrier will host “Outredgeous” romaine lettuce plants as they grow in microgravity for crew members to assess how different amounts of water affect the growth of the plants. Results could identify how different moisture environments alter the production and nutritional content of lettuce grown in space and could improve how food crops are grown on Earth.

Near the end of the day, Williams assisted Hague with an ultrasound exam as she scanned veins in his neck, shoulders, and behind the knees.

In the Nauka module, Roscosmos Flight Engineers Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner rerouted cables throughout the day. Vagner then moved into the Zarya module to assess lighting conditions and later continued to unpack the Progress 90 cargo spacecraft, which docked to the station’s Poisk module on Nov. 23. Flight Engineer Aleksandr Gorbunov completed some computer work before ending his day by practicing his piloting techniques during a Pilot-T session.

2024 MSU Corn Hybrid Demonstration Program Results
Mississippi State goes to great lengths to evaluate, assess and analyze corn hybrid performance, so you have good information to make decisions which improve the profitability of your farm. These Hybrid Demonstration trials are grown in numerous on-farm locations throughout the state where you can better evaluate hybrid performance of our region’s most elite hybrids. Complete results, including yields and plant characteristics from this year's trials are published here.
Selecting well-adapted hybrids capable of high yield is critical to the success and profitability of your farm. Accordingly, Mississippi State goes to great lengths to evaluate, assess and analyze corn hybrid performance. Our university variety testing programs have long played an important role in generating sound, independent performance evaluations from which Mississippi growers can better identify superior genetics. Furthermore, we also conduct a Corn Hybrid Demonstration Program, which enhances the information available for Mississippi producers to make hybrid selection decisions. These Demonstration trials were grown in twenty-one on-farm or research station locations throughout the state where you can observe and evaluate hybrid performance and traits of our region’s most elite hybrids.

Hybrids selected for this program must be validated by producing superior grain yield in the Mississippi Corn for Grain Hybrid Trials or be a relevant market standard. Hybrids are selected annually and grouped into two distinct sets based upon performance in dryland or irrigated culture, since both these cropping systems are prevalent in Mississippi and significantly affect hybrid adaptability. Seed companies are granted the discretion to enter hybrids which have demonstrated superior performance in the Mississippi Corn for Grain Hybrid Trials, or a newly released hybrid that they believe is more promising or better adapted. This establishes a very elite group of corn hybrids for evaluation.

Following is a complete summary of the corn grain yields and plant characteristics evaluated in the 2024 trials grown in irrigated and dryland locations throughout Mississippi.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in conjunction with U.S. Homeland Security Investigations and Gibson officials, announced the seizure of over 3,000 counterfeit Gibson guitars with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price, had they been genuine, of $18,742,820.

CBP officers in coordination with HSI special agents and LASD investigators intercepted the suspected cargo arriving in ocean containers from Asia. CBP’s Consumer Products and Mass Merchandising Center of Excellence (CPMM) assisted in estimating the MSRP of the shipment. Nashville based Gibson confirmed that the guitars intercepted were in fact counterfeit, noting that legitimate Gibson guitars are only Made in the U.S.A.

“These fraudulent guitars may look and feel legitimate for unsuspecting consumers buying them from third party online sources, street markets, unauthorized retailers, and person-to-person transactions,” said Cheryl M. Davies, CBP Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles. “As we approach the busy Holiday shopping season, consumers should pay attention to where they are buying these goods and how much they are paying, and if is too good to be true it probably is.”

More counterfeit guitars seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“We are grateful for the hard work that our U.S. CBP officers, HSI special agents, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigators are doing to stop counterfeiting,” adds Cesar Gueikian, CEO of Gibson. “Our partnership is designed to help every agency work together to protect consumers and our fans from being misled into counterfeits. Today’s announcement gives us hope that we are on the right track, working together as partners. To our music lovers and customers, no matter which American brand you decide buy, always buy direct from the source, or from authorized dealers. Our pledge is to protect the consumer and give them the tools to make the journey of playing guitar and making music the most amazing experience.”

“This is really emotional and personal for us not only because of the protection of our players, but because of our Gibson team at large, including the artisans at our craftories in Nashville, TN and Bozeman, MT, who are generations of American families that have dedicated their entire lives to handcrafting Gibson instruments,” adds Beth Heidt, Chief Marketing Officer at Gibson. “As Gibson celebrates its 130th anniversary this year, we are proud of our legacy of quality and craftsmanship, legendary music partnerships with our artists, and our efforts to promote and create more musicians that continue to shape the sounds of generations of musicians and music lovers across every genre.”

Amidst the beautiful chaos of food, family, and friends, it can be easy to forget the unique place that Thanksgiving holds in our culture: an opportunity to slow down and take a moment to appreciate everything that is good and right with the world. In that spirit, we wanted to send some love to 10 of the things that make Memphis the greatest music city on earth. Happy Thanksgiving, ya’ll, and don’t forget to lift your cup in appreciation for all of the people, places, and organizations that make this city what it is.

The Artists

When it comes to homegrown talent, Memphis has been one of the world’s greatest musical hotbeds for the better part of a century. From all-time greats such as Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Isaac Hayes to cult heroes such as Big Star and Furry Lewis, there does indeed seem to be something in the water.

But while our rich history is always a reason to be thankful, you don’t have to jump into a time machine to find world-class artists. At this particular point in time, Glorilla may be the biggest female star on earth not named Taylor or Beyonce, and artists such as IMAKEMADBEATS, Taliba Safiyah, Marcella Simmien, Southern Avenue, MonoNeon, Valerie June, and Pooh Sheisty have become nationally-recognized figures. That said, some of the city’s greatest art has always been created quietly in the shadows, which remains true to this day.

Radio Stations

In this era of streaming, bluetooth, and other technological advancements that have made listening to music easier than ever, tuning in to terrestrial radio can often feel like a relic of a bygone era. In fact, for many places–especially those who are lacking in community stations– the radio is basically obsolete (unless you just have an affinity for hearing the same 7 songs on repeat ad nauseum).

Memphis radio, however, is just built different. This is particularly true of community stations such as WEVL and WYXR who allow amateur DJs to share their own favorite tunes, disrupting the monotony of corporate radio and putting unique, strange, and local music back on the airwaves.

Museums

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Sun Studios, the Memphis Rock N Soul Museum, the Blues Hall of Fame, Graceland, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame…the sheer number of music-focused museums in Memphis alone is staggering, but even more so when considering their quality.

Seriously folks, people travel from all across the world to visit our cultural heritage sites, especially those that sit on hallowed ground, like Sun and Stax. If you’ve never been–or if it’s been since that 6th grade field trip–do yourself a favor and take a visit. We can guarantee that you won’t regret it.

Record Stores

Although Memphis has lost several beloved record stores in the past couple of decades (RIP Cats, Spin Street, Pop Tunes, Audiomania, River Records, and all of our other fallen comrades), the city still boasts two of the nation’s best in Shangri-La and Goner Records, each of which has been recognized by national publications such as Rolling Stone, NPR, Paste, and others. Add the new kid on the block River City Records to the list and Memphis truly has a wealth of music-buying options in quality if not quantity. Keep all three in mind this year as you begin your holiday shopping, because shopping local is always in vogue.

Venues

Speaking of quality over quantity, Memphis’ live music scene could undoubtedly use a few more live music venues, especially when considering our overabundance of great talent. This, however, is a piece about what we’re thankful for, and that certainly applies to the many great venues that we do have. Whether you prefer catching a headlining superstar at the FedEx Forum or an experimental show at the Lamplighter with 7 other lucky strangers, Memphis has a bit of something for everyone, you just have to be willing to put yourself out there.

Non-Profits

Aside from a very lucky few, most musicians are not able to sustain themselves on creating music alone, at least not without a little help. Thankfully, Memphis has seen a plethora of excellent organizations spring up over the past few years whose mission is to help give our musicians the support and resources that they need. Chief amongst them are Music Export Memphis, the Memphis Slim Collaboratory, and the Soulsville Foundation, all of whom work tirelessly to ensure that Memphis remains a world-class music city. Like all non-profits, all of these organizations depend on the support of the community to continue their missions, so consider supporting them this holiday season if you can.

Recording Studios

From iconic studios such as Royal, Ardent, and Sam Phillips to newer ventures such as High/Low, Electraphonic, and Southern Grooves, Memphis has once again become a world-class studio town that attracts talent from both near and far. Although they often go unnoticed by the general public, studios are the life-blood of any vigorous music scene. So whether you are looking for a state-of-the-art modern facility or a charmingly dusty analog set-up, Memphis has got the goods.

Festivals and Series

With all due respect to the Beale Street Music Festival, who we hope to see make a triumphant return in 2025, Memphis was sorely lacking in large-scale music festivals and similar events for decades. Thankfully, things are certainly trending in the right direction, thanks in large part to the emergence of Mempho, who have introduced both the Mempho Music Fest and Riverbeat in the past several years. They are certainly not alone in introducing or continuing great live music series, though. The Overton Park Shell’s Orion Free Concert Series, the Botanic Garden’s Live at the Garden series, Gonerfest, WYXR’s Raised by Sound Fest, Tone’s annual Juneteenth celebration, and Cooper-Young’s Porch Fest are all beloved institutions that help bring excellent live music to Memphians throughout the year.

Memphis Record Pressing

Did you know that Memphis is the home to the fastest-growing vinyl manufacturer in the United States and one of the largest producers of vinyl on earth? If not, then consider this something new to be thankful for. MRP, which is located on a sprawling complex in Bartlett, has taken advantage of the vinyl resurgence to become the go-to pressing plant for many of the world’s biggest artists. In addition to the many new jobs that they’ve added to the community, there is something undeniably special about pulling out your favorite records and seeing the words “Memphis Record Pressing” etched into the dead wax.

The Memphis Listening Lab

So far, we’ve tried to keep this list pretty general, focusing on larger communities rather than individual entities. When it comes to the Memphis Listening Lab, however, that’s just not possible, because there is nothing quite like it anywhere else on earth. A massive free music library boasting 12,000 LPs, 30,000 45s, 20,000 CDs, and upwards of a thousand music books, the MLL is one of the city’s most distinctive spaces and an invaluable resource for music lovers. In addition to their vast library, the Lab also has a gorgeous, ultramodern sound room that regularly hosts album listening events, release parties, artist Q&As, and much more.
