Breaking: Beginning January 1, Illinois will Require a License/ID for many E-bikes, JB Pritzker signed the E-bike license requirement law into effect today.

Parents, let your kids know they will need to start start walking! The new Illinois E-bike law is designed to curb the use of E bikes and E scooters in Illinois and to generate significant revenue for the state of Illinois.

Enforcement provisions take affect on January 1st. The legislation allows allow police to issue tickets and fines for users of E bikes, E scooters, skateboards, and other similar devices.

The law also requires many owners of E bikes and scooters to obtain a drivers license, and register their E bike with the State and get a license plate ($151 annually). In addition hundreds of thousands of Illinois e-bike users will be required to purchase state approved collision and liability insurance (E bike classification).

To comply with the law next year, individuals may have to trade in their bikes or scooters or modify their bikes so they do not have the capability of exceeding 28 mph.

The law states that Electric bikes and scooters exceeding 28 mph are the primary target of the law. These vehicles will be required to have license, insurance, vehicle registration with the DMV, and other regulations to comply with state mandates.

Analysis: It is well known that Irresponsible E bike and scooter owners are an extreme nuisance to vehicle traffic, and pedestrians on sidewalks, and often these individuals are out to cause trouble, and need to be regulated.

However, this law will force responsible E bike users to scrap their only mode of transportation and forced to sell or obtain a drivers license.

Democrats are looking forward to the money the law will generate! The state of Illinois is expected to profit millions from e-bike registration fees and local municipalities and towns will generate significant revenue from tickets and fines .

It is expected that the revenue the state of Illinois will generates will directed to the City of Chicago to assist with funding of Chicago initiatives.

I will be working remotely this week as I have moved out of my old office and the new office is not ready just yet. Both phone lines will still be answered and I am monitoring my email. If there is a need for in person service I will make arrangements with you on a case by case basis. I apologize for any inconvenience and ask for patience as I navigate this move to allow the growth the office is experiencing to be able to service everyone’s needs better. Thank You, Jaime
