Every 4th of July, as the sky lights up with fireworks and the streets fill with celebration, I take a quiet moment to reflect on the journey that brought me here — to this country I proudly call home.
I was just 14 when I left my homeland and moved to England. I didn’t speak a word of English. I remember the fear, the confusion, and the loneliness of those early days. But I also remember the determination. I learned the language, I found my footing, and I began to understand what it meant to start over.
Then came Canada — another new beginning, another test of strength. But by then, I had learned how to adapt, how to persevere, and how to keep moving forward no matter how unfamiliar the road ahead looked.
And then, 42 years ago, I came to California. That’s when everything changed. That’s when I found not just a place to live, but a place to belong. I built a life here. I worked hard, raised a family, and embraced every opportunity that came my way.
What I appreciate most about America is the freedom it grants me — not just on paper, but in everyday life. The freedom to speak my mind, to practice my beliefs, to pursue my dreams. I honor that freedom every single day because I know what it means to live without it. I know what it means to fight for a better life.
To me, that’s the heart of the American Dream — the idea that no matter where you come from, you can build a future here with hard work, courage, and hope. And I’ve lived that dream. I’ve lived it with every challenge I’ve overcome and every goal I’ve reached.
So today, on Independence Day, I don’t just celebrate the birth of a nation — I celebrate the life I’ve built in it. I celebrate the strength I’ve gained, the freedom I cherish, and the country that made it all possible.
I wouldn’t live anywhere else. This is my home. And I am proud — deeply proud — to be an American. 🇺🇸
