More than 100 people turned out for the bicycle skills training class we hosted this past Saturday for our elementary aged cyclists. We’re pretty confident we have some safer riders in and around Irvine as a result!

Thank you to all the parents who brought their children to attend the Irvine Police Department Traffic Bureau's Safety Training and Riding Skills class on Saturday!

⚽ Orange County Soccer Club donated two soccer match tickets to each participant. Thank you for your partnership and good luck in the Western Conference Finals!

We appreciate everyone who came or supported this class for taking the time to ensure kids' safety when they are out biking in the community.

Riding a bike takes skill and preparation. Please do all that you can to make sure you arrive safely at your destination.

General Bike Safety Tips:
🚲 Keep your bicycle in good mechanical condition (tires, chain, brakes).
🚲Obey all traffic rules and signs -- always give proper hand signals.
🚲Walk your bike across busy intersections.
🚲Always ride with the traffic - as close as possible to the right side of the road.
🚲Be sure the roadway is clear before entering.
🚲Always ride single file and watch for opening car doors.
🚲Most bicycles are built to carry one person -- YOU! And you alone.
🚲If you must ride your bike at night be sure your headlight and reflectors are in good condition.
🚲Select the safest route to your destination and use it. Avoid busy streets and intersections.
🚲Yield right of way to pedestrians.
🚲Always wear a bicycle helmet.

Kids K-8 can learn more at the free Irvine PD Traffic STARS Bicycle Safety Class on Saturday, November 13. More information here: https://fb.me/e/28edNrfHq.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe Halloween! Here's some helpful tips to keep you and your little ones safe this year:

• Make sure costumes fit to prevent trips and falls.
• Decorate costumes and bags/buckets with reflective tape.
• Have kids use flashlights or glow sticks to make it easier for drivers to see them.
• Walk on sidewalks, when available. Avoid darting into the street or crossing between parked cars.
• Stick to familiar, well-lit routes.
• Look both ways before crossing the street. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.

Today is the beginning of National School Bus Safety Week! The Office of Traffic Safety, in partnership with the Irvine Police Department, supports efforts throughout the state to encourage drivers to always stop for school buses for the safety of children.

School buses are the safest way for children to get to school. But part of maintaining that safety is creating a safe environment around school buses. That means understanding what to do when you encounter a school bus, and being extra careful in school zones, particularly during pick up and drop off times.

When a school bus flashes its red lights (located at the top front and back of the bus), drivers in both directions must stop until the children are safely across the street and the lights stop flashing.

Thank you to California Office of Traffic Safety for your continued support.

The Irvine Police Department has been awarded a $370,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long program of special enforcement and public awareness efforts to prevent traffic-related deaths and injuries. The traffic safety program is intended to educate the public on safe roadway habits and deter people from violating traffic laws or practicing other unsafe behaviors that lead to injuries and fatalities.
