There are several laws going into effect in January 2023, and some in 2024.
MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE: Effective January 1, 2023, all employers are subject to a minimum wage of $15.50. At this point, there is no difference based on employee headcount. The minimum wage for salaried employees remains two times the State minimum wage, meaning a new annual salary of $64,480.
There are also many local minimum wage requirements that differ from the State.
IRS STANDARD MILEAGE INCREASE: In an earlier HR Update, we mentioned an increase in the IRS standard mileage rate. We wanted to include that information in this newsletter to best communicate with our clients about the new rate. The new rate was increased to 62.5 cents per mile from 58.5 cents per mile. This change went into effect on July 1, 2022.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE FOR CA EMPLOYEES: Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1949 that requires all California employers with five (5) or more employees to provide employees (with at least 30 days employment) with up to five days unpaid bereavement leave upon the death of a family member. For purposes of this law, family member is defined as a spouse, child, parent, sibling, grandparent, domestic partner, or parent-in-law.
