Yes... we felt the earthquake! Now, to answer some of your most heated questions.
Most of you, along with a lot of others do not have "Earthquake Coverage" on your homeowners insurance policies. It is entirely up to you on whether or not you would like to carry that coverage and we are happy to add that coverage if you want to spend the money and it makes you feel at ease.
First lets educate you about that coverage.
In the state of South Carolina you can add an endorsement (extra coverage) to your homeowners insurance policy to cover for earthquakes. From our experience the average cost is around $300 per year depending on your specific insurer. Now while $300/year may not sound overly expensive the deductible you end up with is a completely different story being that the average deductible is 10%.
So, what does 10% mean?
It means that you have to pay the first 10% of the dwelling coverage for your home, for example if you have a home that is insured for $500,000 then your deductible would be $50,000.
At the end of the day most people decide that it is not cost effective when you take into account the extremely large deductibles but you as an individual have to determine what works for you based on your specific situation. If you have any questions or want to speak more in depth about the coverages on your policy please feel free to give us a call anytime!
