Attention South Texas residents:
Here is some advice for anyone needing home, siding and/or window repairs due to last night's hail and wind storms.
- BE CAREFUL who you let onto your property and into your home. If you aren't expecting them, they shouldn't be there. After you file your claim, an adjuster(sometimes a third party) will call you and set up a day and time for them to come out and assess the damage.
- Understand the claims process.
1- file a claim(make sure you know your policy # and deductible amounts)
2- while you wait for step 3, take photos or video of the damages and try to minimize further damage to your property(tarp broken windows or holes in the roof/siding).
3- set appointment with claims adjuster who will usually call you once they are assigned to your claim. If you haven't received a call in 3 days, call the claims department.
4- meet with adjuster, show them your photos/videos and make sure they do a thorough inspection of your property(walk with them, but let them do their job) If they are only there for less than 10 minutes or you feel they rushed through it, let your insurance agent know. A second look from another adjuster might be needed.
5- now is a good time to meet with contractors to "get on their list"
DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING
DO NOT PAY ANYTHING
STAY AWAY FROM CONTRACTORS WHO SAY THEY'LL WAIVE YOUR DEDUCTIBLE!!!(You could find yourself paying out of pocket in the end)
- Only deal with reputable, licensed, insured and bonded contractors who are familiar with TDI's windstorm certification process and will guarantee a WPI 8 if required. Not having your repairs windstorm certified could cause carriers including TWIA to non renew your wind/hail insurance.
- It is highly preferred to deal with local companies or someone you know you can trust and will provide a warranty for their workmanship(at least 5 years)
- Make sure you get with your city's building code office to ensure your contractor is registered thru them and they pulled the required permits before they work on your property.
Storm chasing contractors are already on their way to our area. Call your insurance agent for more advice and tips.
