A little Cotton family history…
I came across this old article written by Theresa Barrett McRae about my parents, Ebe and Marge Cotton, and their business, Cotton Real Estate and Insurance in Elwood. I had the black and white photo so I tried to colorize it and enhance it.
By the time this article was written, Mom and Dad had already been in business for 30 years. They sold real estate, operated an insurance agency and provided appraisal services. The article also mentions that Mom had been a member of the Million Dollar Producers Club for 10 years.
But one line really caught my attention:
“In the future they plan to add a Mortgage Loan Affiliate to the company.”
I had to smile when I read that.
All these years later, real estate and mortgage banking have been a huge part of my own life and career. I guess you could say it was in my blood long before I ever realized it.
My parents came from a generation that believed in working hard, treating people fairly, keeping your word and taking care of your customers. Their business wasn’t built with social media, websites or internet leads. It was built one relationship, one family and one handshake at a time.
I’m very proud to still carry the Cotton name in this business today.
Thank you to Theresa Barrett McRae for writing this article and preserving a little piece of my parents’ story. Seeing their old Cotton Real Estate sign again brings back a lot of great memories.

Quite a legacy. ❤️
