Mandatory Overtime Legislation Introduced. Imminently, the Nurse Overtime and Patient Safety Act will be introduced in the House and Senate by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Reps. Doris Matsui (D-CA) and Jen Kiggans (R-VA). This legislation will help protect patients and nurses by prohibiting healthcare employers from requiring nurses to work beyond their scheduled shifts, except in genuine emergencies and other limited circumstances. The legislation recognizes that fatigue from excessive work hours can compromise patient safety, contribute to medical errors, and drive nurse burnout and workforce shortages. Importantly, the bill does not prohibit nurses from voluntarily working overtime if they choose to do so. By establishing national safeguards against mandatory overtime, the legislation supports safer staffing practices, healthier work environments, and high-quality patient care.

🌟 Honoring Nursing History: Margaret E. Iddings

Before there was a century of nursing excellence in Indiana, there were pioneers who paved the way.

Margaret E. Iddings holds a special place in Indiana nursing history as the first graduate of the Flower Mission Training School for Nurses in Indianapolis in 1883—the beginning of professional nursing education in our state.

Her dedication and commitment helped lay the foundation for generations of nurses who would follow, shaping the nursing profession and advancing care throughout Indiana and beyond.

At ISNA, we honor the nurses who came before us and celebrate the legacy they created. Their courage, compassion, and leadership continue to inspire our work today.
