As we continue to discuss September being National Preparedness Month, remember to look outside of just your family. How can you help within your community?

Take a CPR or first aid training class.

Join a community emergency response team.

Connect with your neighbors and ask how you can help.

Having your community prepared ahead of time can really make a difference during an actual disaster.

Yesterday we mentioned September is National Preparedness Month.
Are you ready for a natural disaster?

One thing to always have on hand is an emergency kit. This kit could include one gallon per person in your household per day for up to 3 days. Also a flashlight, extra batteries, a first aid kit, a whistle, and a hand-crank or battery-powered radio are great suggestions. Copies of important documents in a waterproof container along with cash is recommended in a water-proof container and essential medicine should be readily available.

Do you have an evacuation plan? With a fire, make sure everyone in your home knows all the ways to get out and the location of the family meeting place. If your home becomes uninhabitable, have a plan to go to a family member's home or know of available shelters in your area.

Are you set up to receive alerts? Sign up for local community alerts and monitor the National Weather Service for updates.

It's always better to be prepared ahead of time.

From ready.gov

When Americans take steps to prepare for disasters and keep their families safe, every neighborhood and community is more resilient. Throughout National Preparedness Month in September, FEMA will celebrate and encourage American resourcefulness and civic responsibility.

Check out their site for all the available information. Some of their key objectives this year are:

🔵 Americans stand ready to uphold our patriotic duty: When individuals are prepared and self-reliant, we can bolster the work our brave first responders do to help people on their worst day.
🔵 Americans stand ready to protect our family and friends: We know best how to keep our loved ones safe when things go wrong.
🔵 Americans stand ready to help our communities: Taking a proactive approach to get your community ready contributes to the nation’s resilience.

September has arrived. 🍂🍎📚🌻

Fun fact:
September gets its name from the Latin word septem, which means "seven," because it was the seventh month in the early Roman calendar before two extra months were added.

Did you know it's Google's birthday month? Google officially launched its search engine company on September 4, 1998.

Also, ever realize more famous songs feature the word "September" in their title or lyrics than almost any other month? Bonus points if you can name a song title in the comments below. 👇

School started.
Labor Day is right around the corner.
When do you close the pool?

In the Midwest, most pool owners typically close their pools down between September 15th and October 15th. Experts say to wait until the mid-afternoon water temperature stays below 65°F for five to seven days.

Did you know closing early can cause winter chemicals to wear out fast and lets algae grow under the cover?

Safety tips for closing your pool:
- Have a locked fence around the pool to keep children or pets from reaching the pool off season.
- A sturdy, anchored safety cover is safer than a basic tarp so it can hold weight if someone steps on it.
- For added safety, install a pool alarm
