🐾💜 Mora’s 3-Week TPLO Surgery Update!

Today was a big day! Mora got her staples out AND started underwater treadmill therapy! 🎉

She’s a very anxious girl and absolutely hates being confined, so I wasn’t sure how she was going to feel about getting into a giant tank and having the door closed behind her. 😬 But she did really well!

Tonight was mostly about getting her comfortable with the whole experience—going in and out of the tank several times, filling the water up to her knee, getting used to all the sights and sounds, and finally doing about a minute or two of actual walking on the treadmill before she decided she was “all done.” 😆

She really seemed to enjoy the water, though. I’ve been calling this “water, walk” since those are both words she knows on her communication buttons.

The machine, however, made a “big, sound” and she was NOT a fan of that part. 😂

We’ll be doing therapy twice a week now to help rebuild her strength and get that leg working properly again.

And I’m very thankful we added the Trupanion Recovery & Complementary Care Rider to her policy. It helps cover therapies like this as part of her recovery. 💜🐾

🐾 Mora Update – Day 4 After Surgery 💜

Today was a much better day! 🥰 Mora spent the day at the office with me. She is a very nervous girl and strangers make her very anxious, so i wasn't sure if she would relax enough to rest.

She did not.

She was in a quiet office with lights off and a comfy dog bed, but she remained in a down-wait position the entire day. Never rolled over to sleep or even lay on the dog bed. I take the win as she wasn't panting, jumping or trying to escape. She was just waiting for me to open the door and tell her it's time to go.

Even with pain medications and a tranquilizer, she stayed ready to go at a moments notice.

Fear can be incredibly debilitating, poor girl. When I rescued Mora, she had spent three months in a pet store in Little Italy waiting for a home. During one of the most important socialization periods of her life, she was being walked by different strangers through busy downtown streets. We've come a long way with positive reinforcement training, but healing from fear isn't a straight line. It's a lifelong journey, and today reminded me of that.

I didn't snap any photos today, but here's what she had to say yesterday morning when I left for the office and attempted to leave her confined to living room. 🤣🤣

No video to go with it, she was mad, knocked over and unplugged the camera. 😂

Animals are incredible souls. Mora and I are part of this UCSD study, which is the world's largest animal study. They compare how animals communicate using AIC tools to that of toddlers and find they communicate and learn language very similarly, in multiple languages, across multiple species. Fascinating stuff 🤯

Study from UC San Diego’s Comparative Cognition Lab shows that dogs trained to use soundboards to “talk” are capable of making two-word button combinations that go beyond random behavior or simple imitation of their owners.

The County of San Diego is urging CalFresh recipients to check their BenefitsCal accounts for their renewal date, watch their mail for a renewal packet, and return it as early as possible to avoid interruptions in benefits. 🐾 Mora Update – Days 2 & 3 After Surgery 💜

Recovery has been a little tougher than we expected.

I think the pain medication is keeping her comfortable, but emotionally she's really struggling with having to stay confined. For a dog who loves to be close to me, being restricted has been incredibly frustrating.

Yesterday, I tried to go into the office, but Mora escaped her recovery area three times—even with her cone on, she somehow cleared a 3-foot gate! Despite pain medication and a tranquilizer, she just couldn't settle.

In this video, you'll see her using her communication buttons to tell me exactly how she feels: "Bye." "Frustrated." And after I yelled "Hey!" because I thought she was making another escape attempt (she had actually just knocked over her water bowl), she looked at me and pressed "Be nice." 😂

She definitely knows how to get her point across.
Today's plan is a little different—she'll be spending the day at the office with me so she can rest while still feeling safe.

🐾 Mora Update..

This was about an hour after coming home. She's frustrated for having to wear the cone and for being confined and in pain.

Needless to say, I didn't get much work done this afternoon. Poor girl.

🐾 Mora Update – Day 1 After Surgery 💜

My brave girl is finally home.
Yesterday was a big day. Mora had TPLO surgery to repair her torn ACL, and thankfully everything went well. The amazing team at VCA even gave her a "Certificate of Bravery." Boy did she earned it. 💜

Today she's resting (or at least trying to!). If you know Mora, you know she's a little "hyper-vigilant." Relaxing doesn't come naturally to her, so recovery will be as much about helping her stay calm as helping her heal.

One thing that makes Mora unique is that she communicates with buttons. Over the past several years we've modeled more than 70 words, and she uses them every day. As she recovers, I'm planning to share not only her physical healing, but also what she tells us through her buttons. I have a feeling she'll have a lot to say. 😊

I'm also incredibly grateful that I enrolled her in Trupanion with the Recovery & Complementary Care Rider. Her surgery was covered at 90%, and now her rehabilitation—including physical therapy and underwater treadmill therapy—will be covered too. Instead of worrying about the bill, we can focus on getting Mora back to chasing balls and enjoying life.

Thank you to everyone who sent prayers, kind messages, and good wishes yesterday. They meant so much to us. ❤️

Mora's recovery journey is just beginning.

Big day for our sweet Mora. 💜🐾
She's heading into ACL surgery this morning, and we'd appreciate any prayers, positive thoughts, or good wishes you can send her way.
We're incredibly grateful for our veterinary team and for Trupanion approving her treatment in advance, which lets us focus on what matters most—getting Mora healthy again.
Now we wait... hoping for a smooth surgery and a quick recovery. 💜
