Many people don't realize exactly what brokers go through to be able to service their clients every year.

Every year we are required to complete a certification course with the federal government for both Medicare and ACA (Marketplace).

Some states (such as ones I work in like VA, KY, MD, GA, and PA) require state based certification courses each year as well for ACA.

Each Medicare carrier that we represent requires us to do a carrier certification training each year prior to the Medicare AEP. This can be quite cumbersome if you want to offer every carrier in every market that you can (like I try to do!).

Every 2 years you are required to complete multiple continuing education courses in order to keep your insurance licenses active with the state.

If you offer annuities then you have to complete a separate certification course for each individual product that each carrier offers.

We sit through numerous carrier trainings and in person meetings throughout the year.

We go through training on new technology platforms so we can be better organized and service our clients efficiently.

We stay up late studying benefits so we don't put someone in a plan that isn't in their best interest.

And not to mention just the process of getting each individual license itself! (20-40 hours of pre-licensing training per insurance license, and the licensing exams themselves).

But you know what? I wouldn't trade it for anything. Being educated on these topics and using that knowledge to help put people in better situations makes it more than worth it.

I just ask that you remember all of this when you are deciding between just calling a carrier directly, going down to your local social security office, handling it yourself online or over the phone, or working with an agent that puts in countless hours to be a valuable resource to their community!
