Madison County Sheriff’s Office Warns Public of Fraudulent “Court Notice” Scam:

Madison County, AL – The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a fraudulent document currently being distributed throughout the county that falsely claims to be an official court notice regarding traffic violations.

The document, titled “Final Enforcement Notice – Court-Ordered Compliance Required,” appears to originate from the State of Alabama and includes official-looking seals, legal references, and a QR code for payment. Remain vigilant and don’t be scammed by these criminals.

“These scammers are counting on people to react quickly out of fear,” said Sheriff Kevin Turner. “Our office and the Madison County court system do not operate this way. We will never send out notices demanding immediate payment through a QR code or unofficial payment site. If you receive something like this, stop and verify before taking any action.”

Residents are urged to be cautious and to recognize common signs of fraud, including demands for immediate payment, use of QR codes or unofficial payment portals, and threats of enforcement action without prior verified contact.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes:

★ Official court notices are not delivered in this manner with demands for immediate electronic payment via QR codes.
★ Individuals should never provide personal or financial information in response to unsolicited or suspicious documents.
★ Any legitimate court matter can be verified directly through the appropriate court office.

Anyone who receives one of these documents is encouraged not to scan the QR code or submit payment and to report the incident to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. We also encourage our citizens to share this information with family, friends, and neighbors to help prevent others from becoming victims.

Madison County County Sheriff’s Office Warns Public of Phone Scam Threatening Arrest:

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an increase in phone scams in which callers falsely claim to represent law enforcement agencies, courts, or federal authorities and threaten arrest unless immediate compliance is made.

In these incidents, scammers are using real law enforcement names, official titles, and spoofed phone numbers that appear legitimate. Victims have reported being sent fraudulent documents, including fake arrest warrants, court orders, and non-disclosure agreements, designed to intimidate recipients into complying.
“These calls are scams,” said Sheriff Kevin Turner. “Law enforcement will not call you to demand money, threaten arrest over the phone, or require you to resolve court matters electronically. If you receive a call like this, hang up. It is not legitimate.”

To help educate and protect the public, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office is sharing examples of documents currently being used by scammers. These documents are not valid, not issued by any legitimate court or law enforcement agency, and are being provided solely for public awareness.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes:
★Law enforcement will not demand payment by phone.
★Courts do not resolve warrants, fines, or bail via phone calls, text messages, or emails.
★No legitimate agency will request payment via gift cards, wire transfers, kiosks, cryptocurrency, or “secure” or “trust” accounts.

Scammers often claim the call involves failure to appear, jury duty violations, or an ongoing investigation, and pressure individuals to act immediately. These tactics are intended to create fear and prevent victims from independently verifying the information.

⚠️What to Do⚠️

Residents who receive a call of this nature should:
★Hang up immediately.
★Not provide personal or financial information.
★Not follow instructions or click on links sent by the caller.
★Report the incident to their local law enforcement agency.

If there is any uncertainty about the legitimacy of a call, residents are encouraged to independently verify by contacting the agency directly using a publicly listed phone number, not the number provided by the caller.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to remain vigilant and to share this warning with family members, friends, and especially elderly or vulnerable individuals.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Huntsville, AL (August 9, 2025) Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner announced today that the Sheriff’s Office is investigating the in-custody death of an inmate at the Madison County Detention Facility. Inmate Demetrius Lemonte Stewart, 52, was booked into the detention facility shortly after midnight this morning following his arrest by the Huntsville Police Department on a Probation Violation warrant. At approximately 3:00 a.m., detention officers conducted routine rounds in the housing area of the facility. Stewart was last observed during the facility’s morning count at approximately 7:30 a.m. and was found unresponsive during meal service about an hour later. Detention officers and on-site medical staff immediately administered CPR and other life-saving measures. HEMSI personnel arrived and continued emergency efforts, but Stewart was pronounced deceased after no vital signs could be detected. According to the detention facility’s medical staff, it is believed Stewart suffered a heart attack. Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes detectives and CSI responded to the jail facility as part of the standard investigative protocol. Mr. Stewart’s body will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death. At this time, there are no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances related to Stewart’s death.

Sheriff Kevin Turner stated, “We are saddened by the passing of Mr. Stewart and send our sincere condolences to his family. Anytime a death occurs in our custody, it is felt deeply by our staff, medical personnel, and the first responders who work tirelessly in these situations. Our thoughts are with all who are affected by this loss”

The investigation is ongoing. Any further details will be released by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Public Affairs Office. No additional information is available at this time.
