Madison County County Sheriffâs Office Warns Public of Phone Scam Threatening Arrest:
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. â The Madison County Sheriffâs Office is warning residents of an increase in phone scams in which callers falsely claim to represent law enforcement agencies, courts, or federal authorities and threaten arrest unless immediate compliance is made.
In these incidents, scammers are using real law enforcement names, official titles, and spoofed phone numbers that appear legitimate. Victims have reported being sent fraudulent documents, including fake arrest warrants, court orders, and non-disclosure agreements, designed to intimidate recipients into complying.
âThese calls are scams,â said Sheriff Kevin Turner. âLaw enforcement will not call you to demand money, threaten arrest over the phone, or require you to resolve court matters electronically. If you receive a call like this, hang up. It is not legitimate.â
To help educate and protect the public, the Madison County Sheriffâs Office is sharing examples of documents currently being used by scammers. These documents are not valid, not issued by any legitimate court or law enforcement agency, and are being provided solely for public awareness.
The Madison County Sheriffâs Office emphasizes:
â
Law enforcement will not demand payment by phone.
â
Courts do not resolve warrants, fines, or bail via phone calls, text messages, or emails.
â
No legitimate agency will request payment via gift cards, wire transfers, kiosks, cryptocurrency, or âsecureâ or âtrustâ accounts.
Scammers often claim the call involves failure to appear, jury duty violations, or an ongoing investigation, and pressure individuals to act immediately. These tactics are intended to create fear and prevent victims from independently verifying the information.
â ïžWhat to Doâ ïž
Residents who receive a call of this nature should:
â
Hang up immediately.
â
Not provide personal or financial information.
â
Not follow instructions or click on links sent by the caller.
â
Report the incident to their local law enforcement agency.
If there is any uncertainty about the legitimacy of a call, residents are encouraged to independently verify by contacting the agency directly using a publicly listed phone number, not the number provided by the caller.
The Madison County Sheriffâs Office urges residents to remain vigilant and to share this warning with family members, friends, and especially elderly or vulnerable individuals.
