🏠 Insurance 101: What Is “Other Structures” Coverage?
Did you know your homeowners policy doesn’t just protect your house? It also includes a coverage called Other Structures — and many homeowners aren’t aware of what all falls under it.
Other Structures coverage helps protect buildings and items on your property that are not attached to your main home.
Examples typically include:
✔️ Detached garages (unless connected by a breezeway — then it’s usually considered part of the dwelling)
✔️ Storage sheds
✔️ Fences
✔️ Gazebos & pergolas
✔️ Detached carports
✔️ Pool houses
✔️ In-ground pools
✔️ Detached workshops or barns
✔️ Mailboxes & light posts
✔️ Detached patios or decks
💡 Important to know:
• If a detached garage is connected to the home by a breezeway, many insurance companies consider it part of the dwelling, not Other Structures.
• Other Structures limits are usually set as a percentage of your dwelling coverage.
• Coverage applies for covered losses like wind, hail, fire, and vandalism (based on your policy form).
If you’ve added a pool, shed, fence, or any detached structure, your policy may need to be updated to make sure you’re properly protected.
We’re here to help you understand your coverage — not guess.
