Still in the spooky spirit? 🎃 Discover the creatures of the night with a fun wildlife presentation and guided night hike! Perfect for curious explorers ages 5 and up. Pre-registration required with Howell Nature Center.

Meet the creatures that come out at night! Some of our wildlife ambassadors will help teach you all about the adaptations nocturnal animals have for life in the dark during a one-hour presentation, then take a night hike with our wildlife experts through our wildlife park to check out what our night owls (and mammals) are up to! Then we'll take to some of our wooded trails to look for other nocturnal creatures.
Ages 5+ welcome Pre-registration required.
General Admission: $12 per person

Former MLB pitcher Chad Bentz, who played for Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins, has been named Howell Public School District's new assistant athletic director.

We have some exciting news to share - Bank of Ann Arbor is expanding! We have entered into a definitive agreement with Huron Valley Bancorp, Inc,. to acquire Huron Valley State Bank. Once the transaction is closed later this year or early next, the combined bank will employ nearly 360 in 21 locations across four counties.

Arbor Bancorp Inc., the holding company for Bank of Ann Arbor, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Huron Valley Bancorp Inc., the holding company for Huron Valley State Bank in Milford. The all-cash transaction is expected to total approximately $52.1 million.

One of the most spectacular signs of fall in Michigan is happening right here in our backyard. Every fall, thousands of Sandhill Cranes make their way through Michigan's southern Lower Peninsula as they migrate south for the winter. And if you've ever heard that unmistakable rattling call coming from the sky, you know just how impressive these birds can be. A Sandhill Crane can stand about 5 feet tall, with a wingspan of roughly 6 feet. That bright red patch on its head makes it even easier to recognize.

But here's the really incredible part: they weren't always this common.

Habitat loss, wetland drainage, and hunting caused Sandhill Crane numbers to plummet in Michigan. By 1944, only 27 pairs remained in the Lower Peninsula. During Michigan's 2022–23 Christmas Bird Count, observers recorded 10,334 Sandhill Cranes across the state's participating count circles. That's a remarkable comeback for a bird that was once so scarce in Michigan.

The cranes have been part of Michigan's history for generations. People once hunted them for food, and hunters have famously called Sandhill Crane meat the “Ribeye of the Sky.” Hunting pressure, along with habitat loss, contributed to their historic decline.

🦅 Where can you see them?

Kensington Metropark is one of the state's best viewing areas, with cranes often spotted along the nature trails and wetlands.

Brighton Recreation Area and Pinckney Recreation Area also offer wetlands, fields, and other habitat where cranes can be spotted during migration.

And if you're willing to take a short drive, Waterloo Recreation Area and the Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary near Jackson are the big show. Haehnle attracts thousands of migrating cranes every fall, with the viewing hill overlooking Mud Lake Marsh providing an incredible place to watch them come in to roost.

The best time? Around sunset.

At Haehnle, peak viewing is generally late October through mid-November, particularly during the hour before sunset, when thousands of cranes can arrive at the marsh to roost for the night.

So as the leaves change and the temperatures drop, listen for that unmistakable HONK overhead.
