**Big news in the hospitality world today**

Sysco is finalizing a deal to acquire Restaurant Depot for $29B. The concern with Sysco acquiring Restaurant Depot comes down to one word: control.

When a major distributor absorbs a large cash-and-carry supplier, competition drops. Fewer options mean higher prices and less flexibility for independent restaurants, who rely on quick, small-quantity purchases.

It also gives Sysco more “bundling power,” letting them influence which brands get priority and making it harder for smaller suppliers to compete. For restaurant owners, this could mean tighter margins, fewer choices, and less negotiating power. For other distributors, it raises barriers to entry and stifles competition.

The takeaway: bigger isn’t always better—especially when your supply chain is at stake.

🤠 It’s Rodeo Season in Houston! 🤠

That means boots, brisket, and some wild rodeo food creations. This year at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Gold Buckle Foodie Award for “Most Creative” went to Brisket Cheese Curd Tacos from Richie’s Cheese Curd Tacos… because apparently regular tacos just weren’t Texas enough. 🌮🐄

It’s a good reminder that in Texas, creativity matters — whether you’re cooking up rodeo food or running a restaurant.

At 86 The Risks, we believe insurance should be the same way. No cookie-cutter policies. Just coverage built to fit your business and your risks — whether you run a restaurant, food truck, bar, or catering operation.

Because every operation is different… and your insurance should be too.

Now the real question is:
Are brisket cheese curd tacos genius… or rodeo madness? 🤔

Let’s be honest…

Commercial insurance for restaurants?
Yeah. It’s not exactly the “fun” line item on your P&L.

No one wakes up excited to pay their GL, property, liquor liability, workers comp, umbrella…

It feels like you’re paying for something you hope you never use. Kind of like buying kale and letting it rot in the fridge.

BUT…

You know what sucks more than paying for insurance?

👉 A kitchen fire the week before your busiest month.
👉 A customer slip-and-fall with a lawyer on speed dial.
👉 A grease trap backup that turns your dining room into a biohazard scene.
👉 Getting told, “Sorry… that’s not covered.”

Claims are where things get real. Fast. And expensive.

Insurance might feel like a necessary evil… but being underinsured during a loss? That’s a whole different level of pain.

At 86 The Risks, we can’t make commercial insurance “fun.”
But we can make sure when something hits the fan, you’re not finding out the hard way that your policy was built like a dollar menu combo.

Restaurants are risky. That’s reality.
Let’s at least make sure your coverage doesn’t suck.

🚨 Texas Restaurant Owners — This Is Why Coverage Matters 🚨

Recently in Austin, Texas, a restaurant suffered a major fire loss that caused significant property damage and forced a temporary shutdown. The claim ran well into the tens of thousands of dollars — and gaps in coverage left the owner absorbing costs they thought were insured.

This happens more often than people think.

At 86 The Risk, we make sure restaurants are covered correctly — not just “insured.”

🍽️ Why proper coverage matters:
✔ General Liability protects you from customer injuries and lawsuits.
✔ Property & Equipment Coverage protects your kitchen, build-out, and inventory from fire, weather, and other losses.
✔ Business Interruption helps replace lost income if you’re forced to close.

💡 Did you know?
• Kitchen fires are one of the leading causes of large restaurant claims.
• A single fire loss can easily exceed $50,000+, not including lost revenue.
• Many policies exclude or limit key restaurant exposures if not written properly.

One claim can set you back years. Let’s make sure it doesn’t.
