The legacy of African American leadership in home health and hospice continues today.

Across the country, African American clinicians, executives, and entrepreneurs are:
• Leading home health and hospice organizations
• Expanding culturally competent care models
• Advocating for equitable Medicare access
• Strengthening outreach through churches and community partnerships

Family-centered care, faith-based support systems, and advocacy for equity remain central themes in this history.

As a Black-owned organization, Precision Medical Billing is proud to support agencies that serve diverse communities with integrity, excellence, and compassion.

This Black History Month, we celebrate the past, recognize the present, and remain committed to advancing equitable care for all.

Dr. Richard Payne is one of the nation’s leading voices in pain management and palliative care.

As a former director of the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life, his research revealed significant disparities in hospice utilization among African Americans. His work helped shape national conversations around equitable access to end-of-life care.

Dr. Payne’s advocacy continues to influence policy, education, and culturally competent hospice practices across the country.

At Precision Medical Billing, we recognize the importance of equitable access to hospice services and the leaders who continue to drive meaningful change in healthcare delivery.

This Black History Month, we honor those advancing fairness, dignity, and compassion in end-of-life care.

In 1879, Mary Eliza Mahoney became the first professionally trained African American nurse in the United States.

At a time when racial barriers were deeply entrenched in healthcare, she not only excelled in her profession but advocated for equal opportunities for Black nurses.

Her work helped professionalize home-based nursing services, which became foundational to the growth of home health care across America.

Because of pioneers like Mahoney, generations of African American nurses have strengthened home health and hospice services nationwide.

This Black History Month, we honor her leadership, resilience, and lasting impact on healthcare equity.

Before formal home health and hospice systems existed, African American communities built powerful networks of care rooted in family, faith, and resilience.

In segregated communities, care for the sick and elderly often happened at home. Churches served as centers of support. Lay nurses and family caregivers delivered compassionate, culturally grounded care long before hospice became a formal model.

These traditions helped shape what we now recognize as holistic, family-centered end-of-life care.

At Precision Medical Billing, we recognize that modern hospice and home health services are built upon generations of community leadership, compassion, and strength.

This Black History Month, we honor those early caregivers whose legacy continues to influence healthcare today.
