After recent storms, many homeowners are being approached by roofers offering to “handle the insurance claim” for them. It’s important to understand what the law actually allows.

In Texas, it is illegal for a roofer or contractor to:

File an insurance claim on your behalf

Negotiate your settlement with the insurance company

Represent you on coverage or claim decisions

Only the policyholder, a licensed public adjuster, or an attorney can legally perform those roles.

What a roofer can do:

Inspect your roof

Provide an estimate

Meet with the insurance adjuster

What they cannot do is take over or manage your insurance claim.
